Publisher's Summary

In this sequel to Pulse, a genetic disease known as Brugada Syndrome kills its victims without warning, without symptom. When the president of the United States falls victim to a weaponized and contagious strain of the disease, the Chess Team - King, Queen, Rook, Knight, and Bishop - are assigned to protect Sara Fogg, a CDC detective, as she journeys to the source of the new strain: the Annamite Mountains in Vietnam.

Surrounded by Vietnam War-era landmines, harsh terrain, and more than one military force not happy about the return of American boots to the Ho Chi Minh trail, the fight for survival becomes a grueling battle in the humid jungle.

Pursued by VPLA Death Volunteers, Vietnam's Special Forces unit, the teams flight through a maze of archaic ruins reveals an ancient secret...a primal secret that may stop the disease from sweeping the globe, even as it threatens both the mission and their lives.

Man-Apes and a new ally

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have enjoyed not only the book but all of the "Chess Team" novels. I would recommend this and the other books to anyone who like Special Force/Super Solider and/or Science Fiction books. This book blends the Super Soldier and the Sciencie Science Fiction genres to create a well developed story and characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

King-He is the lead and is trying to deal with family issues on top of heading up an elite super soldier force all at the same time. He is Rambo and Bill Cosby's love child.

What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?

Kafer brought an easy listening style to a rapid action sequenced and multi-arena story lined book. He had to make each character as well as each storyline separate and distinguishable at the same time since at some parts of the book all the story lines and characters were happening/talking over each other.

if you are looking for a great series this is it!

It's awesome! well worth the read or in this case the listen! I have become a fan boy of jeremy robinson and his books! To be honest it been hard to find a series that can hold my attention and cause me to remember each character and its history. Jeremy has done it and he blends characters from his other series together in new books seamlessly!

Another great adventure!

This story was fast paced and grabbed me from the start. I liked the addition of Sarah to this story. It was great to see a kick-ass scientist assisting the team. I am already looking forward to the next book in the series!

Serious narrator problem

I could not make it past the third chapter. The narrator drops his pitch at the end of every sentence giving his narration the quality of a bad news anchor. His narration was grating; impossible to bear. The artificiality of his inflection robbed every sentence of meaning. I'm giving this a 2, instead of 1, because the story and writing are good. But, I've moved on to the print version.

As always, good high drauma action.

Up front the mythical figures faced are over the top but do add to the story telling. If you can accept that fantasy element of these stories you can learn much about the how it is to be in a killing field of fire, how one responds, and the incredible bonds that emerge.

It's about a USArmy delta team, that while bigger, and braver than the real world of combat gives the listener a peak at how soldiers act, and react in the face of a firefight while it tells a good story. The difference between story action, and a real fight is the heros all have the gods on their side, survive too well.
I'm a Nam Vet who only just survived my final firefight, I'm nobody special , but I know how the real deal feels, how a battle unfolds lives, and dies. One learns to survive in the processes of the killing & dieing around you so your odds getting through it get better with each fight one survives. This "Chess Team" stories hold true.
Still I greave the brothers who died those long years ago following the Tet New Years battles begging February of 1968. - The dreams.
This is good fiction ; enjoy.

fourth time to read, third time to listen.

I absolutely love this series. I found the first book in paperback in Wal-Mart, and I thought it sounded interesting. I now own all of them on Audible as well as some in paperback, hardback, and e- book.
The books just keep getting better and better and Jeffrey Kafer is great. I have reached a point where I can start listening to one and recognize his tones and delivery. Thank you gentlemen for making my working days and car travel enjoyable.
