Critic Reviews

"Drawing on Native American life and lore as it describes the hunt for the killer of a Papago Indian girl, Jance's contemporary novel delivers suspense through rich layers of flashbacks and gritty characterization." (Publishers Weekly)

"Rarely do a book and its audio counterpart merge as spectacularly as they do in Hour of the Hunter.... Engene speaks the native names and tongues beautifully. The tension between the hunter and the hunted remains terrifying until the last second." (AudioFile

Hour of the Hunter

Exciting and also informative. I had a hard time stopping when I needed to do something. Very exciting ending.

Too sexually graphic for our taste.

The narrator was very good. The story was slow and too sexually graphic for our taste. I guess I prefer Jance's other series.

Scratchy background noises

I kept thinking that it was just my device but it isn't. I even tried restarting my device. No joy. I have never had a Mr. Engene narration have this scratchy background but it is very disconcerting.

Great JA Jance story.

Exceptional story. Filled with mystery and suspense. Terrific narratives. The author mixes fiction and research with skill and experience. Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys novels on disc.

The worst J.A. Jance book that I have read

Filled extreme violence and horrific garbage rape scenes- Jance has gone absolutely filthy with this one - not good - extremely nauseating!

Historically accurate!

I truly enjoyed the Papago stories intertwined with the main story. Excellent character development and rich with local details.

Almost nasty in places

Way too sexually descriptive in places. Couldn't finish it. It began as an anthology of Southwestern
Native American stories but it became too graphic.

Not as good...

Would you try another book from J. A. Jance and/or Gene Engene?

yes

What does Gene Engene bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

easy to listen to, speaks clearly. He saves the book

Any additional comments?

Not as good as her other books, took forever to get INTO the book, once I did it was interesting but a lot of flashbacks- so you have to listen carefully to follow.

Great Story - Horrible Narrator

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

J A Jance is a great writer and this book was no exception. The story is great, full of mystery and suspense. However, the narration ruined it. The last few hours was almost intolerable but I stuck it out.

What didn’t you like about Gene Engene’s performance?

I will put this narrator on my list of ' Don't listen'. The female characters were all portrayed as whiny and/or angry, even when the situation did not call for that particular emotion. There were scratchy background noises that were extremely distracting.

Was Hour of the Hunter worth the listening time?

I will continue to read or listen to this author's books, but will definitely read, rather than listen to, any that have Gene Engene as narrator.

Love the narrator

I loved this book, but am so happy to have this particular narrator back reading a j.a.jance novel. Way to go.
