Publisher's summary

Stephanie Plum, Trenton, New Jersey's favorite pistol-packing, condom-carrying bounty hunter, is back and on the trail of a revenge-seeking waitress who's skipped bail. With the help of 73-year-old Grandma Mazur, ex-hooker Lula, a transvestite musician named Sally Sweet, and the all-too-hospitable, all-too-sexy Joe Morelli, Stephanie might just catch her woman. Then again, with more mishaps than there are exits on the Jersey Turnpike, including murders, firebombs, and Stephanie's arch-rival bounty hunter chasing after the same fugitive, Stephanie better watch her back big-time if she wants to live to crack this case.

Narrator was great!

Apparently, unlike many of the other reviews, I like the narration by C. J. Critt. Of all the Plum novels I have listened to, I think Critt is the best!

I really enjoyed listening to "Four to Score" and I think it's is a wonderful book, in fact it was the first book of the series that I listened to so many years ago. I really love all of the unforgettable characters, especially Grandma Mazur! I believe you will really enjoy this book and get a laugh or twelve!

Glad to see the 4th book unabridged, but...

I am a huge fan of Janet Evanovich, especially loving the Plum series, and although I like to actually read a book, my vision (or lack thereof) has made me rely on audio books. I have been having a difficult time finding the first six in the Plum series in an UNABRIDGED format, because as far as I am concerned, abridgment should be outlawed. Really, why not offer the Author the respect of reading every word written? This is not Audible's fault, they can only offer what is there to offer and when an unabridged version of audio becomes available Audible is very good at making sure we have access to it. So, when I found that they were offering the 4th book in the Plum series in an unabridged format I was so excited I bought and downloaded immediately.

I have become accustomed (even spoiled) to the EXCELLENT reading of Lorelei King and was dismayed with the HORRIBLE reading of CJ Critt, which unfortunately dropped a book that would have received at least a 4 star rating down to 2 stars.

Nothing against Audible or against Janet for the words she wrote. In this case, the lack of a good review falls solely on Critt!

CJ Critt is a very good reader for a very specific type of genre; comedy is not one of her gifts. The timing is off, and it just takes the life out of what would have been enjoyable. I have enjoyed the Patricia Cornwell audio books that she has read, but the style of which Janet writes requires far more versatility than Critt can give.

My Audio Book Wish: Get the whole Plum Series Unabridged and read by Lorelei King!!!

Fast paced and fun

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

As my headline suggests, this is a well crafted story with equally good plot and pace.

What does C. J. Critt bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

C.J. critt's ability to switch characters' voice and attitude with panache made the dialogue better than I could imagine if reading the printed version.

I hate the narrator!

After listening to books 1 - 3 and loving the narrator I am very disappointed in this one. She sounds like a dull old lady and not a spunky young NJ woman. I am going to struggle to finish listening to this one.

good plot, iffy narrator

The plot for this book is nearly as good as Evanovich's laters, but if you've listened to books 7-11 which have a fantastic narrator, you'll likely find the narrator for this one disappointing. The voices are ordinary, rather than the utterly hilarious and engaging ones in the later books, and the narrator makes many of the characters seem a bit slow in the head.

Performance blah

I really like the series. Really don't like the narrator. Her choices for character portrayal are terrible.

good book bad narrator

This is a really good installment of the Stephanie Plum series, truly it is, but the narrator CJ Critt is terrible! I almost would have preferred the abridged version because at least Debi Mazar sounds like a thirty year old woman from Jersey and not a 60-ish grandmother from the Midwest. It was so difficult to get into this book because of Ms. Critt. Why she made Grandma Mazur sound like she smokes three packs a day and could possibly be a man I will never understand. If you should choose the unabridged version and agree with me on this particular narrator just push through it because the whole book is worth the listen and Ms. Critt's annoying commendation will soon fall behind the book's flare for comedy and suspense.

I think I'm done with this series...

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I don't think that these books are meant to be listened to. The written dialogue doesn't lend itself well to an audio book. I also don't think the narrator added anything that would make me enjoy the book any more. I also find that the humor is missing when it is listened to rather than read.

What could Janet Evanovich have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

She knows that this is a cash cow for her. She keeps writing them because she knows people will read them. I just wish all the characters weren't all cartoonish.

What didn’t you like about C. J. Critt’s performance?

It was okay. I don't think it added to the book.

What character would you cut from Four to Score?

I just feel like all the characters have become caricatures in the series, which may be its appeal; a mystery series that doesn't take it too seriously. But, I think the book entered "Bonkers" territory when one of the new, main characters is a transvestite named Sally...whose gay roommate attempts to kill Plum and others out of misguided jealousy. It was a distraction (and not a fun one) from the main story.

It's Not Always As It Seems....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, It's just a "can't put it down book" you'll read in one shot.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Lula is a seriously funny and entertaining character. She adds so much to story.

Love the story but I wish Lorelei King had been the reader.
