Publisher's Summary

Meet Conor McBride. He's even more interesting than the trouble he gets into.

A talented Irish musician reluctantly reinvents himself, disappearing into an undercover identity to search for the man who ruined his career: his own brother. On a journey from the west of Ireland to the tumultuous city of Mumbai, Conor McBride's only goal is to redeem the brother who betrayed him. But he's becoming a virtuoso of a different kind in a dangerous game where the rules keep changing - and where the allies he trusted to help him may be the people he should fear the most.

What the Critics Say

"This is one of those times when a narrator lifts a good book just that much higher." (Audiothing)

"…sometimes you find a true gem out among the two- and three-star books. A gem just sitting there waiting to be noticed. This book is such a gem and it is worthy of your notice. It is an international thriller with a giant soul and a great deal of introspection. If you are looking for a 'shoot 'em up', this is not your book, even though there is plenty of shooting. It is the story of two brothers, and like all families, this family is complicated. The audiobook was read by Wayne Ferrell and he was amazing. His voice drew me right in and brought this excellent text to life. He demonstrated a mastery of multiple accents and, more importantly, carried the mood of the story in his tone and pacing as he read." (DWD’s Reviews)

"...expertly narrated by Wayne Farrell. His performance brought the characters to life and added the perfect amount of drama and angst to this well-written thriller." (Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards)

"Absorbing thriller with a compelling hero"
Would you consider the audio edition of Deceptive Cadence to be better than the print version?

It's always great to get just a bit of the Irish brogue for an Irish hero.

What did you like best about this story?

The way it made you care deeply about the characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The way the hero pushed forward despite his struggles with injury and shock.

    Any additional comments?

Highly recommended! I've read the books in the series, and the audio edition is just as good.

    "Fantastic: Riveting and Real"

I loved Deceptive Cadence, and am so pleased it is now out as an audio book. The reader is excellent - perfect for this story. Two points about this novel: first, yes, it is a spy novel, and so there are thrilling moments following stretches of suspense. But it is also a beautifully written story, with well-rendered characters that I really cared about. The settings are varied and beautifully conveyed. Just a pleasure all around.

    "Unconvential Irish Story"

While the idea of an musically gifted Irish farmer becoming a member of Her Majesty's MI6 intelligence service seems fanciful at first, Kathryn Guare's well developed characters andplot makes it plausible. Wayne Farrell's narration brings the characters to life. Their sense of humor is always present in the face of life's stark realities. In this way it is every way an Irish story, even though it is largely set in Imdia. The recurrent references to the lyrical Irish language to the exiled emigrant's experience makes this a novel anyone, Irish or otherwise, will enjoy!

"Kathryn Guare and Wayne Farrell fabulous together!"
What did you love best about Deceptive Cadence?

Beautifully crafted thriller. Love all the characters and their complications. Frank is wonderfully drawn.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Connor McBride. He's tough yet sensitive. Perfect man.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Loved the scenes where Connor is talking to his mother, and/or thinking about his mother and his family. There's a lot of depth and backstory to this thriller.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A lot of the Irish slang is humorous. The way they have of saying simple things. Love that.

    Any additional comments?

I'd already read and loved Deceptive Cadence on the page, but I listened to Wayne Farrell read The Spinning Heart and I couldn't resist tuning in for this. So worth it.

    "Great book well read!"

So excited that this wonderful thriller is now on Audble. Wayne Farell makes this an exciting, on the edge of your seat listen. Guare is a masterful storyteller and the book kept me enthralled from start to finish. Hope to hear more from this team and the rest of the Virtuosic Spy series

    "An intriguing and dramatic thriller!"
If you could sum up Deceptive Cadence in three words, what would they be?

Deceptive Cadence was a thrilling well-written story. There were many twists and turns that formed a believable plot. Some of them you didn’t see coming. There just enough action and suspense to keep my interest. The characters were well develop. You can tell that the author did her research, which added credibility to the story. Kathryn did a splendid job in immersing the reader into the different countries that she writes about. You will that you are really there in that country with the characters.

Wayne Farrell did a great job with the narration. He had a clear and crisp voice that was easy to follow. He did a great job with the voice inflections and many accents. His narration sounded more like real storytelling than simply reading a book.

This is the first book that I have read by Kathryn Guare. I recommend Deceptive Cadence to anyone that enjoys reading a thrilling espionage suspense novel.

    "Worth the time"
What did you love best about Deceptive Cadence?

    Story, character development, narration.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Edge of the seat...as a visual person, words on a page or in my ear do not rise to that level. Had it been a well produced film, it might have.

Have you listened to any of Wayne Farrell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Not yet

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The interactions between Conor and Frank were particularly well done

    Any additional comments?

I am hoping Audible will publish other work in this series that are already available in book form
