There’s a literary niche for all tastes including those who think that either Agatha Christie wasn’t funny enough or that PG Wodehouse didn’t feature anywhere near as many baffling murders as he could have. The Case of the Canterfell Codicil is a classic, cozy, locked-room mystery written in the style of an homage to PG Wodehouse.

It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Americans are stereotypes, and not good ones!
Would you listen to Death at the Alma Mater again? Why?
Good story, but the Americans portrayed are such jerks, and such cliched stereotypes, it is laughable. Better to leave them out.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No.

Pales in comparison to Malliet's other novels
This was an okay listen. It's well narrated, and the characters are fun, like Malliet's other St. Just novels. However - this one really left me feeling flat. It seems to get tied up too quickly, without really having left proper clues. It's as though the author got tired of writing and said, "well, I'll just make this character be the culprit". The characters also were not as well developed as in some other books by this author.
Like I said, it was ok, but if you haven't read G.M. Malliet before, I'd suggest Death of a Cozy Writer (St. Just) or Wicked Autumn (a Max Tudor mystery).

Malliet Does It Again
Davina Porter takes you straight inside the story. I love the humor when you least expect it! Three cheers for a story well told and a narrator who gives the characters so much life!!
