Spring, 1918. The Great War is at a crucial stage, the Germans are making one last push into France, and the Allies are struggling to hold them back. Battle lines are shifting, and men, and their machines, are being sent up and down the front to shore up defenses.

Major Heathcliff Lennox, and his batman Greggs, are told to report to their new HQ. They set off on a sunlit day to fly the distance, but the enemy is never far away, and disaster strikes. They're sent crashing to the ground behind enemy lines, where life, death, and love await.

Major Heathcliff Lennox: WW1 pilot, six feet 3 inches, tousled dark blond hair, named after the hero of Wuthering Heights by his romantically minded mother - much to his great annoyance.

a footnote

Heathcliff Lennox - France 1918 is, I believe, billed as a prequel to the six book mystery series featuring Major Heathcliff Lennox which takes place in England after the Great War.

I gave it a full five stars based on what it is: an explanatory foot note needed after some issues in Lennox's past were revealed during the course of book 5, The Monk Hood Murders. I am glad I read it after book 5 and not as a prequel to the whole series because I feel that placement fits in better with the unfolding of Lennox's character.

It might stand alone okay as a short story, but I think you might enter the series with different expectations if you begin here. My advice is start at the beginning with book 1 and read this footnote book when you get to it, between books 5 and 6.

The narrator is one of the best.

I have enjoyed the series up to now, and hope it's not too long before book 6 is available on audio so I can find out what happens next.

This writer maintains her status as one of my favorite authors - vivid and engaging. I look forward to many more books from her.

This narrator provides - again (Godiva chocolate voice, clear and consistent character individuation, and great voice acting). Award worthy narration.

Story was too short for my taste. The setting and peak at romance was an appetizer. Hoping for a meal at a later date

Loved it.

What a power-packed hour. It was a lovely, bittersweet story, made all the more beautiful by Dewitt-Phillips spectacular voice and masterful performance.
