Publisher's summary

A short story, prequel to the Heathcliff Lennox Murder Mystery series

Spring, 1918. The Great War is at a crucial stage, the Germans are making one last push into France, and the Allies are struggling to hold them back. Battle lines are shifting, and men, and their machines, are being sent up and down the front to shore up defenses.

Major Heathcliff Lennox, and his batman Greggs, are told to report to their new HQ. They set off on a sunlit day to fly the distance, but the enemy is never far away, and disaster strikes. They're sent crashing to the ground behind enemy lines, where life, death, and love await.

Major Heathcliff Lennox: WW1 pilot, six feet 3 inches, tousled dark blond hair, named after the hero of Wuthering Heights by his romantically minded mother - much to his great annoyance.

Adore this series!

There are so many things I enjoy about this series, the leading man is a real man’s man of his time. Stubborn, chivalrous, funny, a dashing war hero & more Heathcliff Lennox delivers. The supporting cast each have their own quirks that endear then to me, especially Tommy such a delight! Sam Dewhurst Phillips is a flawless narrator who brings each character to life in a special way. More please Mrs. Menuhin!!

Love Heathcliff Lenox!

This was a short sweet story giving us a look into Heathcliff’s experience in the war before all the other titles in the series. I have listened to the series as they are available and this was a touching tale to add to the collection.

Beautiful, heartfelt and heartbreaking, this story rounds out the series nicely. Can't wait for Menuhin's next masterpiece.

A (Short) Introduction

While the story wasn't fabulous, it did introduce me to Heathcliff Lennox and his backstory. I listened to it as a prologue to the first book in the series, Murder at Melrose Court (which I loved). My first experience with Sam Dewhurst-Phillips narrating and I was impressed.

Into the past

I enjoyed this look into the past that Lennox was in France during the war. It gives some insight of what could have been if not for the war.

Nothing new or exciting here.

Short, thankfully so. No imagination to this first story. I believe it was only to introduce the main character which could have been accomplished in a few paragraphs.

a footnote

Heathcliff Lennox - France 1918 is, I believe, billed as a prequel to the six book mystery series featuring Major Heathcliff Lennox which takes place in England after the Great War.

I gave it a full five stars based on what it is: an explanatory foot note needed after some issues in Lennox's past were revealed during the course of book 5, The Monk Hood Murders. I am glad I read it after book 5 and not as a prequel to the whole series because I feel that placement fits in better with the unfolding of Lennox's character.

It might stand alone okay as a short story, but I think you might enter the series with different expectations if you begin here. My advice is start at the beginning with book 1 and read this footnote book when you get to it, between books 5 and 6.

The narrator is one of the best.

I have enjoyed the series up to now, and hope it's not too long before book 6 is available on audio so I can find out what happens next.
