Publisher's Summary

Dawson Scott is a well-respected journalist recently returned from Afghanistan. Haunted by everything he experienced, he's privately suffering from battle fatigue which is a threat to every aspect of his life. But then he gets a call from a source within the FBI. A new development has come to light in a story that began 40 years ago. It could be the BIG story of Dawson's career one in which he has a vested interest.

Soon, Dawson is covering the disappearance and presumed murder of former Marine Jeremy Wesson, the biological son of the pair of terrorists who remain on the FBI's Most Wanted list. As Dawson delves into the story, he finds himself developing feelings for Wesson's ex-wife, Amelia, and her two young sons. But when Amelia's nanny turns up dead, the case takes a stunning new turn, with Dawson himself becoming a suspect. Haunted by his own demons, Dawson takes up the chase for the notorious outlaws...and the secret, startling truth about himself.

    "Great complex story"

Narrator was good although there were a couple moments where it was unclear who was speaking in a conversation.

Loved the story. I appreciated the complexity of the characters. Nice romance without being obvious or forced.

    "Mixed bag as usual"

Sandra Brown is great at novel plot lines keeping you guessing. However all the male leads start out nasty like the old romance novels with heroine's who pretend to hate them until they learn about some excuse provided to excuse the men's lack of control with sex and anger. The deep love is based on looks and hormones as they allegedly fall in love before they know each other. While I am intrigued figuring out the plot, I have started fast forwarding through the numerous sex scenes as they are the same in every book of hers that I have read. I think she is a talented author who does not have to depend on providing soft porn to sell her books.

    "another great Sandra Brown book"

I was skeptical after reading other reviews on here, but I do enjoy her writing. I thought it was a fantastic book and not 100% predictable, there were some great surprises in there!

    "Worst Sandra Brown Ever!"

Boring! It took me 2 months to get through it. I would fall asleep within a few minutes of listening. I've read/listened to some books that took several chapters before picking up. This one never did - not till the last couple of chapters. It was a waste of a credit.

    "Absolutely Gripping!"
Where does Deadline rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'd have to say in the top five for sure and I have listened to a lot of really good books!

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's hard to pick just one but I guess I will say Dawson. He has a lot of hidden qualities to him that keeps you wondering.

Which character – as performed by Stephen Lang – was your favorite?

Mr. Lang did a really good job with Bernie.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was surprised by it a couple times but no laughing or crying.

    Any additional comments?

This is a great story from beginning to end. Is is gripping and suspenseful. It has a lovely romance that builds slowly throughout. The plot has the listener on the edge of their seat to the last second. Sandra Brown did herself proud with this book!

    "Dull story. Dull narrator."

The story plods along. It was hard to stay interested. The characters were the weakest part. They were not interesting. No chemistry. No intrique. A plot was developed, and the bad guys got it in the end. But I didn’t care. I just wanted the book to end. The bad guy killed and hurt so many people. Those were the depressing thoughts left with me at the end. I would have liked some happier feelings.

The romantic relationship between Dawson and Amelia was not well developed. I didn’t feel any chemistry. There were two intense kissing scenes and three sex scenes. The sex scenes were vaguely described and short.

    AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Stephen Lang should not read romance novels. He does not read with sensuality or sexuality. Tom Stechshulte was fabulous when he read a guy’s lines in another book, I was melting. If Tom were reading this book he would have put very different feelings in both the hero and heroine voices. But Lang was stilted and wooden. The hero should have feelings of desire and treasuring her. Lang’s voice had none of that. It was not sexy. Also, I did not like any of his voices for women. Throughout the book the heroine’s dialogue sounded wimpy, weak and wan. A different feeling by the narrator could have made her more interesting. Instead she was blah. Harriet’s voice was weird and cartoonish. The narrator grew up in Queens, NY. He still has some of that accent for example, he says ar rent (for aren’t) were rent (for weren’t) and sometimes: har or huh (for her).

    OTHER BOOKS:
Sandra Brown is hit or miss with me. My favorite books of hers are Mean Streak, Envy, and Mirror Image.

    Genre: mystery suspense with romance.
