Editorial reviews

"Dahl's stories work better in audio than in print.... [Kate Winslet's] Matilda is younger than Broadway's, has less attitude and more adenoid. But at the aggrieved voices of the horrible Wormwoods, or Miss Trunchbull, or several schoolchildren, I laughed aloud." (Gregory Maguire, The New York Times Book Review)

Publisher's summary

Now a musical!

Matilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a menacing, kid-hating headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it!

Here is Roald Dahl's original novel of a little girl with extraordinary powers. This much-loved story has recently been made into a wonderful new musical, adapted by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

Kate Winslet Brings this Amazing Story to Life

What made the experience of listening to Matilda the most enjoyable?

Kate Winslet, an obviously great actress, brings this story to life. Without a hint of timidity she dives into each character, making them all feel truly unique without pulling you out of the story with unnecessary exageration.

What did you like best about this story?

The story is amazing, it is Annie for the 21st Century. Matilda does not (even if she were able) rely on any adult to get things done, and fully takes charge of her own destiny. There is not a single adult in this story that is not pitiful; yes, even the likable Ms Honey is rather pitiful as an adult. And, even though they are all pitiful the story does not get bogged down in fee-sorry-for-the-kids mantras. It is completely entertaining, from beginning to end.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite, is a small one where Violate and Matilda are told of the horrors in the school by an older student. That scene allows you to envision a thousand stories of the kids' endurance and rebellion at the school.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

There is already one. "The right of every kid to stand tall, no matter how small." But if I were going to make a tag line it might be something like; "Matilda, when life gives you lemons, make champagne."

A wonderful kid's story that adults love too!

If you could sum up Matilda in three words, what would they be?

Magical, warm, funny

Who was your favorite character and why?

Matilda of course. I love how resourceful and caring she is.

What does Kate Winslet bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I thought she did a great job bringing all the characters to life and made it more vivid.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

There was already a movie that is actually very good. I have no idea what the tag line would be.

Any additional comments?

This is a delightful story that is sure to win over the child in your life. Matilda is a very strong little heroine who makes the most of her circumstances, values education and has good morals in spite of her lousy parents. She is definitely a character you will want to root for.

If you could sum up Matilda in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining, Heart-Warming, Witty

Which character – as performed by Kate Winslet – was your favorite?

Mr. Wormwood! Kate Winslet brought this character to life and I thought the accent was spot on - even though he is a rather unseemly character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I read this book with my third graders every year and they LOVE this version. They CRACK UP through the entire book!

Fantastic narration

Kate Winslet is fantastic and does wonderful voices for the many colorful characters. I downloaded this for my 4-year-old for a road trip and I think I enjoyed it as much or more than she did.

Delightful

I'm a big Dahl fan so I wasn't surprised by my enjoyment of this story and I couldn't imagine a better performance than the one Winslet gave in this narration. The voices she gives each character are just right and not over done, just made a good story that much better. Highly recommend this for all ages.
