Publisher's summary

When you say “I do", you begin the journey of a lifetime, and you have dreams of that journey being perfect. But it won’t take long for expectations of the perfect marriage to fade away in the struggles of everyday life. A long-term, vibrant marriage needs to be grounded in something sturdier than romance - it needs the life-changing power of the gospel.

In this rebranded edition of What Did You Expect?, popular author and pastor Paul David Tripp encourages couples to make six biblical commitments to the Lord and to one another. These commitments, which include a lifestyle of confession and forgiveness, building trust, and appreciating differences, will equip couples to cultivate thriving, joy-filled marriages built on Christ.

Excellent

This is not for the faint of heart.....but, if you can let your toes be stepped on a bit, you will walk away a better spouse

Challenging but wordy

Paul Tripp has excellent things to say and I was so challenged in my marriage he is however very wordy so just know that. He could be more concise but that’s my only complaint.

Good for Couples

Good marriage advice but hard to follow because the narrator is a dreadful bore.

Excellent yet challenging read

This book is a very powerful book on marriage. Read it while engaged and found it to be incredibly fruitful, yet extremely challenging. It will challenge you to let God mold you and break selfish habits you may have not even known you had. I found it incredibly helpful as I am preparing for marriage. I can also see it as a great re-read to refresh.

Read this if you're desperate for hope in marriage

In my opinion this is one of the best books on marriage in print. I can't think of a book on marriage I would recommend more highly.

The author covers many situations in marriage we can all relate to, and walks step-by-step through problems.

The refreshing perspective I find most helpful in this book is that there is no whitewashed, rosy colored topical treatment of problems in this book. The problems he covers are ugly and real life. I find it beautiful how he reaches into those situations and meticulously sorts through the problems to find where truth from scripture applies to the situations specifically.

This is a book for people who have come to the end of themselves and recognize that doing marriage their way doesn't work.
