Publisher's summary

Discover the single greatest secret to a successful marriage! Touted as a classic among marriage books, Love & Respect reveals why spouses react negatively to each other and how they can deal with conflict quickly, easily and biblically. A New York Times best seller with over 2.1 million copies sold.

Cracking the communication code between husband and wife involves understanding one thing: that unconditional respect is as powerful for him as unconditional love is for her. It's the secret to marriage that every couple seeks, and yet few couples ever find. While both men and women deserve both love and respect, in the midst of conflict the driving need for a woman is love and the driving need for a man is respect. When either of these needs isn’t met, things get crazy.

Based on over three decades of counseling, as well as scientific and biblical research, Dr. Emerson Eggerichs and his wife, Sarah, have taken the Love and Respect message across America and are changing the way couples talk to, think about, and treat each other. If you want to feel peace, closeness, value, and to experience marriage the way God intended, this book will help you get there.

Love and Respect is for anyone: those in marital crisis, the happily married, engaged couples, pastors and counselors, and small groups. This dynamic and life-changing message is impacting the world, resulting in the healing and restoration of countless relationships.

What readers are saying about Love & Respect:

Invaluable Tools - Heaavy on Religion

What did you like best about this story?

Everything that people are saying about the book is true. Love Emerson's voice, love the advice, can't wait to put it into use. In fact I have started following the advice and already see some change. Now I just need my boyfriend to read the book and hopefully see some major improvements in our relationship.

Any additional comments?

I am not a religious person, in fact I do not believe in God. When the book first started, I rolled my eyes every time he mentioned the Bible (he quotes scripture throughout). I guess I did not realize he is a pastor. I had to reframe my thinking to get through the book, so when he mentioned the Bible I thought, "The book of morals, the book of morals!" Because that's what the Bible is, essentially, a guide to the right (righteous)/moral way to live. If you are also non-religious, I suggest skipping the last hour (Audible chapters 28-30, book chapter 23). These chapters are simply telling you, the listener, to follow his guide because the Lord commands you based on his interpretation of the Bible. This does not help me.

Otherwise, the book was great. If you are an ultra FEMINIST, you must listen with a very open mind and take from it what you'd like. I am a feminist myself, but do believe that men and woman are built differently and have very different needs. This book definitely opened my eyes to how a man thinks. He described how I think and how my boyfriend thinks to a T. Religious, feminist, or not, I think everyone should hear his message.

Not for you if you are a team in your marriage!

This book was recommended to me by my father. It was annoying to read and even more offensive to listen to! It bases its entire logic in the idea that women only desire to be loved and men only desire to be respected. His condescending tone toward women, which is even more apparent listening to him read the book, and his assumption that men just can’t help their behavior is ludicrous! I am a stay at home mother and my husband is the provider but we are STILL very much partners and both desire to be BOTH LOVED AND RESPECTED! I would not recommend this book.

Helpful. Glad I bought it. Some reservations.

Overall I'm glad I bought this book. My wife and I have a great marriage and almost never fight or get into tiffs, so I was reluctant to buy because most marriage books are slanted toward those considering divorce.

Overall I felt this was true from a male perspective and it was very refreshing to read a marriage book that didn't make all guys out to be horrible sinning savage beasts.

However, there were two things I think could be improved.

First, I think it maybe went a bit too far in the way it explained how the woman should respect the man's decisions for the family. My wife felt afraid to even voice her opinion anymore until I told her to just stop being so respectful and be herself like she usually is. She is always very good to me so I think this book made her feel like she wasn't doing a good job and needed to change something.

Second, I wish there were far more specific ideas of things I could do to show love for my wife. I get the concept and I tell my wife I love her all the time. Just wish there were lots of creative ideas in this book to get me thinking.

Garbage

He laughs at his wife’s needs and desires. He is a chauvinist. Perhaps 30 years of studying the Bible was not enough. One verse is not everything.

Had to return

I couldn’t even listen to half an hour of this book, let alone torture myself for 8 more hours. He’s very condescending and little laughing and smirks at his wife’s feelings. No thank you!

A contesting for a healthy marriage

The simplicity of this book will leave you dumbfounded as to why this BASIC truth is not being taught from every pulpit in the country. I will continue to reread this book and pass it down to my children when they come of age

This book is a marriage saver!

We are not strictly Christian, but the overall message still worked miracles for us. Don't let the religious nature of the book turn you off if you are not a follower. If you are really ready to do anything to save your marriage, read this book.

Not looking for subjugation of women

I really tried. I did. The concepts proposed kn this book are so offensive, I could not get past the third chapter. If you are looking for fundamentalist Christian views of ‘marriage’, this book is for you. If you are looking for your wife to be your equal, this is NOT the book for you.

Good content but definitely biased & outdated POV

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

While the some content was very good and many of the stories relatable, the slant in favor of the man was very difficult to overcome. As a woman who was severely physically and mentally abused, many times with the abuse being accompanied with quotes from scripture to support it, the book seemed to give men a preferred level of excuse for their behavior. Domestic violence is an epidemic and one could see how a man would use this book to further support their behavior.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No

The best relashionship book ever!!

I have always thought about what Paul wrote about love &I respect, but never realm understood why my husband so needs my respect. While I felt misunderstood and unloved. I've read and shared with my husband. I am respecting him and seeing how he is respected and respectful. Thanks.
