Publisher's summary

A beautifully tangled story of friendship, fairytales, and family secrets. For those who loved Pax and The War That Saved My Life.

The year is 1919. Mama is ill. Father has taken a job abroad. Nanny Jane is too busy to pay any attention to Henrietta and the things she sees - or thinks she sees - in the shadows of their new home, Hope House.

All alone, with only stories for company, Henry discovers that Hope House is full of strange secrets: a forgotten attic, ghostly figures, mysterious firelight that flickers in the trees beyond the garden.

One night she ventures into the darkness of Nightingale Wood. What she finds there will change her whole world....

Heartbreaking and Heartwarming

It was so sad at times that it was a challenge to get through. The superb writing and reader kept me coming back and I am glad I did.

A magical mystery

This book was perfection. I am not sure what I was expecting, but this book had everything - mystery and suspense, humor, adventure... I binge-listened, Ms Strange’s narration has me entranced and lost in the story. Her beautiful tale tore at my heart, and made my spirit soar. Beautiful. Absolutely perfect.

Wonderful

Beautiful story about a strong 12 year old holding her family together when the adults closest to her can’t. Great mix of fairytale & reality through the eyes of this smart little girl. Loved the narration.

An adolescent's grief story

This book was amazing! It really tugged on the heartstrings and had incredible insights on how western society viewed grief 100 years ago. What stood out to me was that it portrayed grief from an adolescent's point of view. I couldn't help but feel frustrated with the main protagonist as she tried to navigate life after loss and was not being heard by the people that were supposed to have her best interests at heart. I loved how the main character persevered and how she found the secret of Nightingale Wood.
