Publisher's Summary

They are outcasts. Hal, Stig, and the others - they are the boys the others want no part of. Skandians, as any reader of Ranger's Apprentice could tell you, are known for their size and strength. Not these boys. Yet that doesn't mean they don't have skills. And courage - which they will need every ounce of to do battle at sea against the other bands, the Wolves and the Sharks, in the ultimate race. The icy waters make for a treacherous playing field - especially when not everyone thinks of it as playing.

John Flanagan, author of the international phenomenon Ranger's Apprentice, creates a new cast of characters to populate his world of Skandians and Araluens, a world millions of young readers and listeners around the world have come to know and admire. Full of seafaring adventures and epic battles, Book 1 of The Brotherband Chronicles is sure to thrill fans of Ranger's Apprentice while enticing a whole new generation just now discovering the books.

    "Really Great Book"
What made the experience of listening to The Outcasts the most enjoyable?

I really like this book. It is different then a lot of the other "super power" books right now and it was really fun to listen to.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the humor in this story and the constant bickering between the twins

Have you listened to any of John Keating’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and I just sat down to buy some more by this author.

    "A great tale"

As usual Flanagan has created a story that entertains and teaches at the same time. Bullys who wound through words and deeds, personal and interpersonal challenges (alcoholism, facing disabilities, etc) all addressed through the bonds of friendship and teamwork. Great for kids and something for adults too.

    "WANT MORE!"
Where does The Outcasts rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It ranks in the top 3 (For my son, it's #1). I bought this audio book per the wishes of my 11 yr old son...as I was trying to get him to enjoy reading thru audio... (he hates to read).. I thought the audio book was going to be boring... BUT we both ended up LOVING it! Listening to the Narrator, John Keating, is also fun... you end up trying to say the words in the story with his accent....Loved how he said

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Outcasts?

The whole book kept you wanting to listen to it every chance you had... Love when the outcasts become winners.... We loved listening to the part where Hal and his

    Any additional comments?

My son and I can't wait for the next book! We wanted more ...... we checked and it's May of 2012..... uggg...

    "very well done"

I never read the Ranger's Apprentice series, but watched it circulate heavily in my library. I chose to start with Brotherband Chronicles as I was browsing new releases in Audible for my commute (I hook my Kindle up) and decided it was time to see what the craze was about. I have to say the storytelling was great and I look forward to downloading the next one.

the story is subtle, dark and twisty enough to satisfy dad. at the same time my 13 year old and my 16 year old got a story written to them. the performance was very good too.

Maybe I it's the draw of the open ocean! Though both are different, this series rivals the ranger series... Keating has hit his stride with this series!

    "Great Book but NO GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!"

This book is really good and I wish I could give it five stars, the narrator is good and it is a perfect companion for rangers apprentice and I love the story it is amazing but there are no girl parts. There is Hal's mother and one or two other parts but unlike rangers apprentice there are no girls. Not even romance. Don't get me wrong this book is AWESOME when it comes to adventure and it has a great story SPOILERS: I love how Hal wins the brother band and how the artifact gets stolen (who leaves a bunch of boys in charge of guarding it by the way) . END OF SPOILERS, but I just can't deal with the fact that there are no girl parts this is perfect for boys who hate romance but girls if you want to see a book with strong willed ladies read rangers apprentice it has amazing characters and two AWESOME SPEAKING GIRLS.

    "SPOLIERS"

I thought this book was a great read and listen, The reading was great. The voices were well done and I look forward to continuing his series. My only gripe is the end fights against itself.
If the most prized possession of the entire country is guarded by the best warriors of that country, why would you ever let a bunch of kids guard it for one night. It just seemed really stupid.

"Great book, bad choice of narrator"

The story was great but the narrators voice sounds more like a British novel then a Viking like people's voice. All the "barking" commands given by huge Scandian men sound more like gentlemen giving aristocratic orders
