Publisher's Summary

A timeless classic. Few stories are as widely read and as universally cherished by children and adults alike as The Little Prince. The perfect audio companion, this Bolinda edition will capture the hearts of listeners of all ages.

The book has been translated into more than 160 languages and, to date has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. It is one of the top 50 best-selling books. It has been adapted into a movie musical by Lerner and Loewe, two different operas, as well as into an animated series. It is often used as a beginner's book for French language students.

A pilot stranded in the desert awakes one morning to see, standing before him, the most extraordinary little fellow. "Please," asks the stranger, "draw me a sheep." And the pilot realizes that when life's events are too difficult to understand, there is no choice but to succumb to their mysteries. He pulls out pencil and paper... And thus begins this wise and enchanting fable that, in teaching the secret of what is really important in life, has changed forever the world for its readers.

Critic Reviews

"Humphrey Bower's crisp British accent describes the magical and unlikely friendship between the pilot who was struggling to survive and the boy who was trying to return to his tiny home planet. The pace is measured, and the tone grows more melancholy as the narrator resigns himself to the loss of his extraordinary companion." ( AudioFile)

Wow.

I bought this classic book (in paper format) many years ago to read to my kids. I started reading it to them twice, but never got far before giving up. To be honest, I wondered what the fuss was about. But then I never got past the first quarter or so of the book.

The nice thing about audible books is, unlike a regular book, it's easier to keep reading than it is to stop. So, I decided to give this book a second chance yesterday when Audible put it on sale. I bought it and listened from start to finish. Wow, I'm sure glad I did.

The story is very original. It tells the tale of a space-travelling child who meets an air-travelling adult. The final three quarters of the book sets out a profound and poignant view of life and does so in such a way that you can never quite decide whether it's aimed at children or adults.

The story is very touching and thought-provoking and a good use of two hours of your life (or your kids’ lives). Highly recommended.

Beauty's Not Just for Youngsters, You Know—

These are two of the most graceful two hours ever written or recorded. How can't "The Little Prince" be for grownups also?
It sings to the imagination and reminds us of the excitement we felt as children, when we had dreams, when we saw pictures in our heads and our hearts soared with the desire to draw them, to share them. It also reminds us, as adults, of where pettiness can get us, bitterness, a lack of drive to move even though we have big dreams of what's out there.
The little prince speaks of his travels, tells the tales of his heart to the narrator and we the readers/listeners get to experience the wonders in tandem. Friendship with a lonely fox, longing to find meaning in his life. The love of a single rose.
Don't deny yourself this tiny bit of beauty in a sometimes gray, always maddeningly quick world.
Even though he cried when the Little Prince left, the fox wanted to be tamed.
He wanted to be tamed.

Where's the beef?

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I liked the book, but I didn't find it terribly memorable. It wasn't the classic that I was expecting, but I liked it.

Would you be willing to try another book from Antoine de Saint-Exupery? Why or why not?

Yes. The story was worth it.

Which scene was your favorite?

Meeting the fox.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

It's too short for a movie.

Any additional comments?

I liked it but I didn't think it was earth shattering.

Rose among the Stars

The Little Prince is a rare kind of book that hits all the right notes, regardless of the readers age. Children will love the imaginative world(s) and the really endearing characters. Adults will pick up on some of the books subtler themes such as loss and memory and will probably see much of themselves in the Prince and his friends.

There isn't much more I can say, aside from that I truly love this book. Also, Humphrey Bower does a fantastic job reading. Beyond highly recommended!

The LIttle Philosopher

Where does The Little Prince rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of my favorite "lighter listens". I'm not much of novel reader, but I do like the simplicity of children's books though I rarely read them. I read Le Petit Prince in french while in high school but don't remember getting as much out of the story then as I have 20 years later.

What other book might you compare The Little Prince to and why?

The Lesson by Carol Pearson. I doubt it's an audiobook, and it's significantly shorter, but it's a wonderful story.

What about Humphrey Bower’s performance did you like?

He did the voices so well. And I could visualize the story as it was being told.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

... if only I could be as creative as the little prince I might come up with an appropriate tag line :).

The Little Prince

The narrator reads or rather tells this story in a manner that lets you forget it is a book being read......It seems like he is right here reading a bedtime story. This classic book is a wonderful fantasy that says so much about us as we become adults and often lose much of our imagination. A reread or relisten of this book is mandatory for all adults children. I recommend it to all adults and recommend after reading it that the adults read it to children.

A Tender Story that Needs to be Read Over and Over

A Little Prince is a wonderful story of a young boy who finds himself on earth. It is a beautiful reminder to adults about what is more important in life. The reader was wonderful and I am aiming to review this story once a month for the message shared is essential.
