Publisher's summary

A profound, epic thriller set in Bombay—a standalone novel and a sequel to the international bestseller Shantaram.

The first glimpse of the sea on Marine Drive filled my heart, if not my head. I turned away from the red shadow. I stopped thinking of that pyramid of killers, and Sanjay's improvidence. I stopped thinking about my own part in the madness. And I rode, with my friends, into the end of everything.

Shantaram introduced millions of people to a cast of unforgettable characters through Lin, an Australian fugitive, working as a passport forger for a branch of the Bombay mafia. In The Mountain Shadow, the long-awaited sequel, Lin must find his way in a Bombay run by a different generation of mafia dons, playing by a different set of rules.

It has been two years since the events in Shantaram, and since Lin lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he'd learned about love and life. But Lin can't leave the Island City: Karla, and a fatal promise, won't let him go.

Fans of Vikram Seth, John Irving and David Mitchell will love Shantaram and The Mountain Shadow.

Good follow up book

But not as good as the first. Character development was awesome and were true to original story.

Excellent in every way

It was as captivating and well written as the first book. I appreciate the authors style of writing and the honesty in his story telling. I hope he continues to write.

The joy of story telling

Masterful performance. Great story, even better pearls of wisdom, and the best performance of by the artist bringing this story alive.

Pick Up Where You Left Off

I read the first book over 10 years ago but was able to pick this up as if it was yesterday. It was nostalgic and welcoming to see the same characters and writing style.

The first 3/4 of the book were excellent, the plot built in all the right ways. However, I felt like some major plot points toward the end rushed. Overall, it was worth the read and a joy to connect with Lin’s Bombay world!

Trying too hard

It was good but not as effortlessly poignant as Shantaram. It felt gimmicky where Shantaram felt like new age renaissance. He also lost the plot somewhere along the line and spent 2 hours tying up loose threads. Still a monumental effort.

Great Sequel

I loved Shantaram and this book held up as its sequel. Fantastic listen. The performance is stellar. Impressive how many accents the actor is able to use throughout the narration.

Enjoyed every minute of it

I immensely enjoyed both the story and the writing and the narration. For some reason, this book really made me nostalgic for pre-smart phone era.

Loved both books!

I love long novels about India. Loved the narrator. Some readers are bothered by all the philosophical musings and aphorisms, but I think they add what I imagine is the personality of the author. Highly recommend!

As good as first book

If you liked the first book you will like this too. I am ready to read a third book with Lin and Karla and all the rest of the colorful characters.
