Publisher's summary

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself.

Until the Minotaur chases him to summer camp.

Suddenly, mythical creatures seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. The gods of Mount Olympus, he's coming to realize, are very much alive in the 21st-century. And worse, he's angered a few of them: Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy has just 10 days to find and return Zeus's stolen property, and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. On a daring road trip from their summer camp in New York to the gates of the Underworld in Los Angeles, Percy and his friends, one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena, will face a host of enemies determined to stop them. To succeed in his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of failure and betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Don't miss the other titles in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

Not s good narration

I bet the book was a good one, however I couldn’t stand listening to the narrator. I will not be getting the rest of the series on tape.

Fun boy's adventure with a lively narrator

Would you listen to The Lightning Thief again? Why?

Generally, I don't listen to audiobooks twice simply because I don't have time, but I am eager for the sequel - more Percy, Annabeth, and Jesse Bernstein!

What about Jesse Bernstein’s performance did you like?

Jesse Bernstein does a fantastic job of bringing Percy's snarky, sarcastic voice while at the same time making the character sympathetic

Narrorator- eh

When I pick up a audio book I don't read the reviews before I read the book. I don't want to be influenced by other peoples judgments before I get a chance to see it for my self and make my own opinions. So After I finished the book a little while ago I thought I had already made a review... I didn't so here it is:

A lot of people didn't like the narrator, but liked the story. I have to agree the narrator wasn't what I had expected as a voice however he grew on me. Just like in many of the other series novels I listen to once you get used to one voice you can't imagine another. I hope to hear this narrator again in the next book that I've already bought.

The downside to the narrator is that he does sound a little childish. Not in the way he speaks but how he speaks. He has a young voice which is alright. At first I didn't like it like so many others, but as I said he grew on me. His voice was the voice of the main character, Percy Jackson, and I could not even fathom another voice being his. Jesse Bermstein made Percy Jackson come to life with his voice alone. Given the characters nature and as another reviewer had said... I think Jesse's voice completed the character which I'm assuming is why he is also the narrator of the novel.

So then review the story time; The story was a 10/10 hands down. I've always loved the Olympian gods and the mythology of the era I even thought about writing my own story modernizing or bringing the gods into our life... To bad Rick Riordan beat me to it :) It's ok though my story would have sucked in comparison as I'm a sci-fi writer.

Everything about this novel is excellent the reason I picked it up is because I saw the movie and I was amazed and dazzled. So I came for the book and I shouldn't have been awed at how much better it was, but I was. The Lightning Thief is a good read so much detail and research thrown into this book's background. I learned things about the mythology of the gods I probably had forgotten so many years ago. The characters sounded like their ancient stories. Perfect capture of everything. Story, characters, and presence. I don't know how to explain that part really, but all I can say is you should read it for your self. Once you get past chapter 1 you'll get passed the voice because thats when things start getting good.
