Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Story
Alan Gregory is a clinical psychologist with a thriving practice in Boulder, Colorado. His life begins to unravel when one of his female patients is found in an apparent suicide and the local paper begins printing accusations from an unnamed source of sexual impropriety between the woman and Dr. Gregory. He launches a psychological and personal quest for the truth that rapidly intensifies when more of his patients die untimely deaths, and Gregory suspects not only that the deaths are related but that another one of his patients may be somehow involved. Lacking facts but roused by suspicion and troubled by seemingly random acts of terror around him, Gregory starts to fear for the safety of the people he loves. The question of the inviolability of confidential disclosures made to Gregory by his patients - privileged information - becomes crucial as the psychologist pursues an unsettling romance with Lauren Crowder, a lovely deputy district attorney investigating one of the deaths. Bound to silence, Gregory follows the psychological tracks of someone he fears may be a cunning and disturbed killer, while turning to his enigmatic but supportive partner, Diane Estevez, for counsel, and to his tart-tongued female urologist neighbor for support. The sinister, surprising drama unfolds against Boulder's Rocky Mountain backdrop, in the arresting natural beauty of Aspen, and in the midst of a baroque Halloween costume party in downtown Boulder. Finally, in a lonely mountain lodge enshrouded in menace, the story comes to its breathtaking climax.

Story
My life was ordinary until three years ago when I was thrown out of a downtown hotel window. My name is Robbie Brownlaw, and I am a homicide detective for the city of San Diego. I am 29 years old. I now have synesthesia, a neurological condition where your senses get mixed up. Sometimes when people talk to me, I see their voices as colored shapes provoked by the emotions of the speakers, not by the words themselves. I have what amounts to a primitive lie detector.

40 year old cold case solved?
I speaks well of Robert Dugoni's writing skills that the third novel in the Tracy Crosswhite series while the weakest of the three is still a solid 5 star detective thriller. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Emily Sutton-Smith's narration is wonderful, as it always is.

Double Mystery
This story encompasses two very different unrelated homicide cases. Though the stories are intertwined the cases are not. Several reviewer's found this very confusing and hard to follow. I did not.
The more interesting of the stories involves evidence collected 40 years before by a deputy sheriff. The forensic science at that time was not what it is today. Reviewing the evidence and using forensic techniques available today allows the puzzle to be solved, but nothing can undo the damage done to those who originally decided to keep the crime a secret.

Most enjoyable book
What made the experience of listening to In the Clearing the most enjoyable?
The plot, the entire book held my interest. I do enjoy Mr Dugoni's stories. I find them concise and to the point. very easy to keep track of the characters, which I do not always find in mystery books.
What other book might you compare In the Clearing to and why?
So far I have had the pleasure of listening to 3 of this series and will continue to look for more book by this author.
Have you listened to any of Emily Sutton-Smith’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Only in this series, but I do think she is on my list of favorites.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Cannot say without my review being a spoiler.
Any additional comments?
I have found a new Author and Narrator.

In the clearing
I love this author. Again a story with many twisted turns. You only know the truth on the last page. Thank you for the good naritave without which I would not be able to enjoy so many good stories.

Excellent story
Excellent story as always. So easy to get through and never black and white.

I started listening to this series on audio and really like it. it keeps my attention and by the end I'm really looking forward to the main character solving the mystery/crime.
