A hilarious and addictive first book by Kenny King, a cultivation fantasy/system optimization series—perfect for fans of Beware of Chicken and He Who Fights With Monsters—where an underpowered hero must level up in a strange fantasy world through sheer determination and endless persistence.

When Chuck dies and wakes up in a fantasy game world, he discovers that the secret to success isn’t heroics or clever tricks—it’s sheer grinding persistence.

After spending four months hitting a practice dummy until he breaks the combat system, Chuck embarks on a methodical quest to obtain the most powerful gear possible through relentless optimization. Armed with his evolving practice sword and an unwavering commitment to making his numbers go up, he tackles elemental dungeons, goblin hordes, and the occasional social interaction with the same cold efficiency.

In a world where most adventurers rush headlong into danger seeking glory, Chuck will be the ultimate grinder, meticulously calculating every copper coin, every experience point, and every decimal place of damage in his single-minded pursuit of perfect stats.

Sometimes, the most powerful weapon isn’t magic or heroism. Sometimes, it’s just refusing to quit.

I’m on chapter 19 and they have talked about stats being a thing as food raises it but this guy is lvl 13 now and I haven’t heard his stat allocation once. I’ve only heard about experience and attack lvl. This seems like a massive oversight that could have been fixed by some basic editing. I read it was crunchy and I like that but this it isn’t. Omitting that huge detail is too big a hole in the story to overlook especially for a book described as crunchy.

Crunchy but not

Great narrator! Luke never disappoints. My first system optimization series, I figured there would be lots of stats. Stats were fast, but I didnt mind. I dont focus too much "on the numbers". I really enjoyed to story. Great MC and side characters. MC's player name is NSFW btw, headphones required! Looking forward to the next release.

Crunchy but Fun

Not much story. Just a power fantasy where the main guy can’t lose and never comes close to dying. Enjoyable especially because the reader is so good at voices. Good if you are going through rough times and just need a hero who can’t lose.

Reader is fantastic, story is power trip

This was a good start to the series, though I did find myself overwhelmed at times by the constant combat calculations. After nearly every battle, there’s a detailed breakdown of experience points gained, and I often felt like I needed to tap the skip-ahead button. It does improve in Book 2, where the author moves toward summarizing those moments instead of listing them in full.

That said, I really enjoyed the character himself and the relationships he builds. His single-minded grind dedication was both entertaining and oddly nostalgic, reminding me of old-school video games where persistence and effort paid off over time. Even more fun was seeing how other characters reacted to his relentless focus.

Since this is Book 1, I want to add a note for readers considering the full series: while this first book is true to the genre and very approachable, Book 2 shifts into including multiple explicit sexual scenes. There are none here in Book 1, but some readers may appreciate a heads-up before committing to the series.

Overall, I loved the story and the narration. It was a fun listen and a solid entry into the genre.

Fun grind, but heavy on combat math

I laughed. A lot! The MC takes weaponised autism to new heights with a level of 'just don't care" about anything else that creates a single minded focus which pays off handsomely.
I will be checking out more of this guy's work.
The Bubba Likes It! Do Recommend!

Excellent fun!

For a stat list heavy litrpg, the narrator adds color to the grind making the audio version a good buy.
As to the story itself, one star reviews said it was spreadsheet pr0n. Not so. I've read a ton of solo leveling gamma male social rejects who understand neither women, men or themselves. The protag is a bit on the spectrum but forms a team of sorts and has a interactions. All men aren't treated as hateful chads and all women as matronly approving teacher types. So, yes, this is worth a read. Life is stressful. This book isn't.

Complementary Narration

An over powered main character, as the title of the book suggests which I love. No drama, just the MC advancing skills killing monsters. This is exactly the kind of book I really enjoy, giving a nice break from reality that doesn't involve lots of people dieing or other heavy topics. Just feel good enjoyment.

A delightful read

Fun story with a strange, but fun, opmc. However the author keeps forgetting how their system works. So far I've encountered at least 20 different instances of "that's not how that worked last time".
This book needs a rewrite with a good editor involved bacause it would be really good if the litRPG elements made consistent sense. As it stands it's just OK,

Someone needs to do a sanity check

Fantastic first book in the series. I’m really looking forward to the second installment. MC reminds me of Data in a LitRpg genre.

Love this book.

Overall 3/5
Performance 5/5
Story 2/5

80% of this book is just stats, every enemy that is hit gives you a FULL breakdown of exactly what Modifiers are responsible for the Exp that is given. The MC is essentially a robot emotionally the whole book. All he cares about are stats. It gets so bad that by the end of the book the Narrator mostly speed mumbles the stats just to get through them.

If you LOVE stats this book is for you.
