Publisher's Summary

The newest installment in the New York Times best-selling companion series to the Fox historical docudrama, Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies: The Civil War is a pulse-quickening account of the deadliest war in American history.

From the birth of the Republican Party to the Confederacy's first convention, the Underground Railroad to the Emancipation Proclamation, the Battle of Gettysburg to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies: The Civil War reveals the amazing and often little-known stories behind the battle lines of America's bloodiest war and debunks the myths that surround its greatest figures, including Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, General Robert E. Lee, Frederick Douglass, Stonewall Jackson, John Singleton Mosby, Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, John Wilkes Booth, William Tecumseh Sherman, and more.

An epic struggle between the past and future, the Civil War sought to fulfill the promise that "all men are created equal". It freed an enslaved race, decimated a generation of young men, ushered in a new era of brutality in war, and created modern America. Featuring eyewitness accounts that further bring the history to life, The Civil War is the action-packed and ultimate follow-up to the best sellers The Patriots and The Real West.

Exceptional

Transforms history into a living breathing reality. This work condenses into manageable format a complex and sometimes misunderstood period of time. Explaining that there were honorable individuals on both sides of the conflict, as well as villains and cowards.

The detail of how the war was ultimately transformed in to a fight to free slaves, from the initial goal of saving the Union is paramount.

The chapters that center on Stonewall Jackson, William T. Sherman, U.S. Grant and Uncle Bobby Lee are immensely satisfying.

The takeaway is that war is hell, should be avoided and that the initial patriotic romanticism will eventually give way a a rotting corpse of reality, cannot be missed.

History comes alive

Many things I thought I knew about the Civil War were corrected and in a few cases confirmed in this outstanding work of literature.

enjoyable read and even-handed.

it was an enjoyable read. It was in fact difficult to put down at sometimes. often civil war books have a slant politically but this one seemed even handed.

Civil War unplugged

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The sheer scale of detail in this book is staggering. The style of writing has you in the moment with the armies. This is a riveting detail-laden book and the narration is just as captivating. I'll be listening to this more than twice.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Robert E. Lee - his contradictions, his beliefs, his loyalty to his cause, despite his love of his country. He is, for me, the most fascinating character of the entire war.

What about Robert Petkoff’s performance did you like?

His voice is mesmerizing. Inflections given as if he was witnessing the events first hand.

The Civil War: the Details Left Out of Textbooks

It reports the ugliness of the war. The waste and carnage tallies. The hardships the recruits had to tolerate. The principles that bonded the armies together. It was not gruesome. It conveyed events and personalities in a very readable manner.
