Publisher's Summary

Kate Priddy makes an uncharacteristically bold decision to move from London to Boston after her cousin, Corbin Dell, suggests a temporary apartment swap. But soon after her arrival, Kate makes a shocking discovery - Corbin's next-door neighbour, a young woman named Audrey Marshall, has been murdered. When the police begin asking questions about Corbin's relationship with Audrey and his neighbours come forward with their own suspicions, a shaken Kate has few answers to tell.

Not great, not bad.

Definitely better and worse out there, good story but somehow I couldn't really care about Kate. Henry sounded like the kind of bloke it would be fun to share a beer with though!

Spoilt by disappointing ending.

I agree with other reviewer, turn the speed up to 1.25 or it is painful to listen to. This could so easily have been a 4 star listen but sadly when it finished I was left utterly disappointed and a bit shocked. Such a shame as I had grown fascinated with the story after a slow start. Lots of things were painfully obvious and whilst you couldn't guess the ending you feel somewhat cheated by it. I don't want to say it's not worth a credit as so much of it is and it won't be the first book I've read where the being has been slightly disappointing. This may well be better as a movie - maybe that was the intention?

An enjoyable listen overall.

I was gonna say a disappointing conclusion, but probably fairer to say , not the ending I was expecting or I would have written but it kept me listening every spare moment I had over the weekend. it took me a while to warm to the narration but found by speeding it up it sounded more pleasing to my ear. Couldn't not recommend because lots of extremely well written and creeping/scary/unsettling moments.

Good Twister

Claustrophobic thriller set in Boston with interesting characters. Well-paced plot with skilful use of multiple narrators. Could have been read at a brisker pace with fewer irritating pauses in delivery but enjoyable on the whole.

Such a shame

It’s such a shame that this talented author used this particular narrator. Far too many very unnecessary pauses. I had to replay the book 4 times as I fell asleep each time missing vast amounts of the story.
This author would be well suited to a sleep app. As you really do fall asleep.

However, the story was catchy enough for me to want to repeat the parts I’d missed. Well put together and with a few surprises.

A male and female duo would have been great reading this audio book. But not the slow actress they chose. Sorry. Very frustrating.

Good but I prefer other thrillers by Swanson

This one could be, I think, improved if all the Paris story were moved to the end. This would create more surprise!
Excellent performance.

Listenable but I'll have forgotten it next week

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A far more engaging narrator - there was something curiously flat about Burton's delivery through the entire programme. There was no sense of suspense or intrigue and next to no expression of emotions. She also seemed to fall-back on some terrible stereotyping or - failing a good stereotype - a particularly amnnoying wishy-washy vocalisation of female characters.
A much better story would have helped, too

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The denoument was exactly what you knew it was going to be, and then there were two or three more chapters of waffly froth which added nothing to the experience.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

See above - also her pace was so staid and stodgy.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It was a reasonable story which managed in places to unfold at a reasonable pace. I never thought of not finishing it.

So insanely dull

Absolutely nothing unique or interesting about it. I held out to the end hoping there would be an exciting twist but omg what a waste of my life. The end is as boring, predictable and pointless as the rest of the book. The characters were annoying and vapid. The narrator was boring and talked so slowly. Please don't buy this book, it's so bad. If you insist on doing so, at least speed the narration up to 1.25x to make it slightly bearable. I loved The Kind Worth Killing hence why I bought this but this is the worst audiobook I've ever listened to.
