I really enjoyed the entire book. it's fast pace and has a competent MC.

Good second book

This one explained a lot about the Tao and powers. Sometimes it was a little tedious in the explanations but that's probably because I was looking for the action/fighting sequences to start. Those are really well written by the way. I think those explanations will become very important in the next book and the mc get a lot stronger. You can see that there is a buildup happening in the background with outside factions looking to interfere with Earth. Even though the book is very MC-centric, there are a lot of moving parts and pov's in the universe. I think book 3 will see a lot more action due to this book's buildup or strength, political movement, and his overall advances in strength and powers. Overall, this was a pretty good book

Strong story, frustrating mechanics

The story was engaging overall, but there were several elements that frustrated me. In the previous book, one plot point was left unresolved until chapter three of this installment. While I appreciated finally getting an explanation, the way it was handled didn’t sit well with me and felt like an unsatisfying way to close out the earlier conflict.

Another element I struggled with was the main character’s repeated reliance on “negative karma” to overcome difficult challenges. While it adds tension, the severe backlash to both him and those around him felt more frustrating than compelling, and it lessened my enjoyment of the story.

The author also introduces background scenes with powerful characters. While these moments are clearly meant to expand the world, the way information is revealed often feels more confusing than helpful, and doesn’t always serve as effective foreshadowing. One example is the mention of “usury” in connection with the emperor, which is raised but not explained, leaving it hanging in a way that distracted rather than intrigued.

On the positive side, the narration by Daniel Wisniewski was excellent as always and kept me invested throughout. Overall, the book had good moments, but certain narrative choices made it harder for me to fully enjoy the experience.
