Story
Once I was a fae princess with sea-magic at my fingertips. Now? I’m a hunted supernatural in a squalid shop, stripped of my power. My only comforts are stale cookies, Elvis records, and my hula-hoop. Then a lethally sexy fae king arrives and rips even those away. After the brutal king throws me in prison, I strike a bargain with him: my freedom in exchange for helping him find a magic blade. What Lyr doesn’t know is that the blade might restore my stolen magic. But as we journey, the gorgeous jerk starts to make me feel things I’ve never felt.

I love the premise, almost awesome
I love the premise of this story. The conflict between H/h is believable. With such a great idea and interesting characters, I am enjoying these stories. Connith, the king, remains mysterious and very appealing. He starts out strong, but author changes and lets him kind of drift. I was hoping for more of the interesting things he did in opening chapters. He deserved better. Fortuna is set on “abrasive”, and she has good reason!, however it’s hard to like a constantly angry, vengeful character. I kept thinking she would have been awesome if her thoughts and speech could have been tweaked a bit. Little more creative.
Also, It’s very original concept to have a sort of love triangle, and even a possible fourth intriguing “friend,” two of whom exist, well, in a way only Fortuna can perceive! So very unusual, but it really works somehow.
There was so much to explore that isn’t touched, which is too bad.
The narration started out okay, though I don’t think everything Fortuna says or thinks needed to be rendered SO angry, or so snarky which really grates. Some variation on delivery in general needed. Strangely, About halfway, the different voices begin to blend. By the end, Fortuna often sounds more masculine than the men. The narrator apparently can’t do the deeper range for men but she adequately distinguishes them at first. I prefer some change in the register, but it’s okay how she handled. But it’s a jolt when towards the end they start sounding the same and it’s easy to mix them up.

ACOTAR Copy
I'll start by saying that I did enjoy this book. My main issue is that this story and the characters are so close to one of my favorite Sarah J Maas books (A Court of Thorns and Roses) only this one lacked the build up and detail that Sarah created. I would guess that K.J. Sutton used ACOTAR as her inspiration. I like the Fortuna as a character and the author has a unique take on the origin of the supernatural creatures that I am enjoying. I hope the story diverges from the ACOTAR line of events in the next book since I could easily predict what was going to happen after I realized the similarities.
The narrator did a great job. I listened to the Fable series and enjoyed her performance there as well. It was a pleasant surprise to hear her again.

I tried so hard, but it’s just not a good book
The writing is especially lacking. I really wanted to get into this story. I don’t have any more books on my “to be read” list and I hate the tags if searching. I listen everyday when I run and I really needed something to start so I used a credit to by this audiobook. It started out mediocre, and went down hill from there. I am not attached to any of the very flat two dimensional characters. I love the idea of the protagonists dream world, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to make myself finish this even for the sake of the few redeeming qualities this audiobook does contain. (Trials for the crown, an underground fairy court world, and a curious dream world).
If you are looking for a good series I would recommend the Air awakens, Poison story, or of course ACOTAR or blood and ash. Do yourself a favor and save your credits, skip this one.

This book is so amazing!!!! 😱
I don’t know why this isn’t as popular as it deserves to be. I’ve love Acotar, Cruel Prince & Throne of glass, but this book is at that level! I couldn’t put this down. Fortuna Sworn is my fave heroine. This book had no heavy info dumping. It was fast-paced & no unnecessary, annoying drama.

Unoriginally original.
I will start by saying that the concept of Fae coming from fallen angels was original. But. After that, I just could not get into this book. If you’ve read ACOTR, then this is a less inspired duplicate. Compared to that book- this is so uninteresting and the characters so flat as to be laughable. The narrator doesn’t change inflection between characters, so everyone sounds female, just slower. Please don’t waste your credit.

Soo promising
I disliked the main character so much that I enjoyed all the antagonist in the story, for the mere fact it would cause Fortuna trouble.
I don’t understand how she can be so self-righteous.
Maybe it’s merely early days and she will redeem herself in the following books. She definitely needs to mature and stop being so selfish.
Maybe my feelings towards the book are prejudice because of the likeness to ACOTAR.

Interesting
The start was amazing... then it dipped a little bit that was just the character building and the world building. This ended on a cliffhanger, so naturally I can’t wait to listen to the next book. There’s so many directions this story could go in and there’s so many unanswered questions I am eager to find out.

Wasted potential
2.5 stars
I can’t really say I enjoyed this. I was kind of just along for the ride because Collith and Laurie really intrigued me, and I can see that their relationships with each other and with Fortuna could be really great.
In saying that, I definitely don’t like Fortuna. I can’t imagine anybody feeling warm towards her. I couldn’t really tell you much about her other than that she worked at some sort of bar with some friends who seemed important and were eventually pretty well irrelevant, that she wanted to be a veterinarian—which might’ve come up early in the book for all I know but I only remember it from the last chapter or so—and that she’s a Nightmare. Which suits her really because she’s quite awful to read about.
Perhaps it was the work of the narrator but Fortuna just came across as super whiny and aggressive, which I personally find to be very irritating in a main character. And as far as making it seem natural that so many men fall at her feet for a crumb of affection, I just can’t tell what draws them to her. She has Oliver (a literal imaginary, dream friend), and the King of the Unseelie Court, Collith, frothing over her and for why? Not to mention Laurie, because it seems a safe to assume that he’ll be well and truly in the mix.
Since they supposedly see Fortuna’s true face and not the image of absolute beauty that her Nightmare nature conjures for each individual that looks upon her, what’s the drawcard?
I can’t find anything to love in Fortuna other than her drive to protect and save her brother. Which of course is admirable, but is it enough to make me drool over her? No. To be fair, she has tough competition from my favourite female characters because they’re all immaculate, but even without that she’s just nothing special.
I really didn’t have any plans to read the next book, since only two characters caught my interest—though maybe I’d have been tempted if I was guaranteed to get either of their POV chapters in book two—but that last line? THAT LAST LINE? I was sitting up doing my silly little arts and crafts, then I heard that one word, that one name, and all of a sudden I was lying down on the carpet. Mind blown. Completely. Is it enough to make me read the next book? It might be. Maybe. Idk but woah, I did not see that coming!
To be fair, I forgot who most of the characters were as I was reading the book. It really says a lot about the story, and my interest in it, that I forgot so much while still reading the book—so if there were any clues hinting at that juicy, lil nugget of information that the book ended on, maybe I just simply forgot them immediately. We’ll never know for sure.
Unfortunately, none of the information in the book seemed important enough to fixate on, unlike some of my favourite series. I guess I just prefer stories where every detail seems integral to the plot, character development and world building. The more immersive, the better. Fortuna Sworn just didn’t provide that.
Speaking of world building, I didn’t really feel much in the way of that in the Unseelie Court. With any Fae inclusive narrative, I’m in it for the ways and working of the Courts. I want the hot goss and the drama, and I want to see whoever rules the court using their power for good (or evil, I'm fine with either). Fortuna Sworn just didn’t give me enough of that. A conniving, power hungry Fae here, and a mistreated human there, but nothing really spoke to the workings of the court. Just a throwaway sentence every now and then. With Fortuna’s new ranking in the court, I expect that that’ll come into play in book two, but I doubt I'll ever find out.
So, despite all that Fortuna Sworn is lacking, is that twist ending enough to make me read the next book?
There’s a chance. Will I spend another audible credit on book two? Nope! I can’t see myself enjoying the series enough to continue it unless I try to read it physically/as an ebook. The narrator is not for me, and I think the only way to retain the (possibly) relevant information is to read it with my own two eyes, and, of course, highlight the living hell out of the story so I can look back on anything that seems important. Because at this rate it’s all too easy to forget.

It was ok
This book was recommended to me and I decided to listen to the audio book rather than read the kindle version. The storyline had a really slow start and took me a while to get into. I’m not a big fan of the narrator and I think that has influenced my rating on this book. The storyline was okay, it has a lot of potential, so I’ll definitely continue to listen to the second book and decide whether I will continue with the series.

Excellent story
The story is excellent if a little slow to develop. The twists are not too obvious and the descriptions are well written. I am definitely interested in carrying on with the series. the narrator is not bad but the characters' voices are not distinguishable.

A twisting tale of the unsealy court
Found it a little hard to get into nut after persistent I enjoyed the plot and characters. A good listen for those who love fairy drama

And just as she's stealing away with her seriously suspicious purchase, she's magically thrown into the world of Partholon, where not only has she taken the place of Rhiannon, Goddess Incarnate and Epona's Chosen, but she's due to be married to a surly (but oh-so-handsome) High Shaman centaur, ClanFintan.
