Publisher's summary

Rye Tyler was 12 when his father was killed in an Indian raid. Taken in by a mysterious stranger with a taste for books and an instinct for survival, Rye is schooled in the hard lessons of life in the West. But after killing a man, he is forced to leave his new home. He rides lonely mountain passes and works on dusty cattle drives until he finds a job breaking horses. Then he meets Liza Hetrick, and in her eyes he sees his future. After establishing himself as marshal of Alta, he returns, only to discover that Liza has been kidnapped. Tracking her to Robbers' Roost, Rye is forced to face the man who taught him all he knows about books, guns, and friendship. Two old friends...one woman: Who will walk away?

Always Good Listening!

I am a huge fan of Louis L'amour, I have read every book he has written. So it is nice to get to have the books read to me for a change. I also like the fact that these books don't have a lot of swearing and sex, I can listen to this book and not worry about my kids. I reall liked the narrator.

Simple but kept me thinking

Louis Lamour writes it where you feel like you could be the main character I can almost hear the leather creek in in the saddle and taste the dust from the trail.

Alta, Utah

Loved this from the beginning. Was so surprised when Alta, UT was included. I've lived at Alta for 40 years. Bucket of Blood is long gone but the Goldminer's Daughter is still here. Grandpa delivered the mail by horse team starting in 1898 despite avalanches until 1920.

Chronologically this is one of the best earlier books the L’Amour

This is the tenth Louis L’Amour book that I have read as I read them in chronological order. This is to this point by far the best of the ten books so far. A wagon train heading west, a father and his fifteen year old son, Rye Tyler, with wagon trouble left behind by the main wagon train is attacked by Indians. The father is killed the son survives. With his father and mother dead, hunts down the Indians and kills a few regains his horse and supplies. Returns to the wagon train and accuses one of the bad men of purposely leaving him and his father. He leaves the wagon train with a new gun fighter friend, Logan Pollard, and becomes a cattle driver. After loosing some cattle to a couple of Mexican bandits he hunts them down and shots one and his friend, Logan, saves him by shooting the second bandit. There are different opportunities in the book that Rye finds himself in a situation that he is required to use his guns. He travels throughout the west trying to hid his reputation and to New Orleans and back west as he tries to gather money to buy a ranch. He falls in love with a young lady, Liza, who is two year younger. He works for her father that get killed by a outlaw sheriff. The book pivots from the gunslinger Rye Tyler to a young man trying to reunite with his love interest, Liza. The book has a really unique twist as it concludes with a showdown between Rye and Pollard for Liza. It has some really cool character names like Mustang Roberts, Rye’s sidekick towards the end of the book and will have you counting the men that Rye guns down. This book was the first of Louis L’Amour that held my attention with a tight grasp throughout every word. This is definitely one Louis L’Amour book that you need to read.

Amazing book

Have read multiple L’Amour books. This is the best. Have read it twice, and it was just as good the second time. Great storyline and characters that just make you want to keep reading. Highly recommend.

always a favorite

Living in the 4 corners, I love these tales. Knowing Mr L'Amour loved this area enough to immortalize it.
