Publisher's Summary

A quintessential Jojo Moyes novel about a lost girl and her horse, the enduring strength of friendship, and how even the smallest choices can change everything.

When Sarah's grandfather gives her a beautiful horse named Boo - hoping that one day she'll follow in his footsteps to join an elite French riding school, away from their gritty London neighborhood - she quietly trains in the city's parks and alleys. But then her grandfather falls ill, and Sarah must juggle horsemanship with school and hospital visits.

Natasha, a young lawyer, is reeling after her failed marriage: her professional judgment is being questioned, her new boyfriend is a letdown, and she's forced to share her house with her charismatic ex-husband. Yet when the willful 14-year-old Sarah lands in her path, Natasha decides to take the girl under her wing.

But Sarah is keeping a secret - a secret that will change the lives of everyone involved forever.

    "The title interested me."

It didn't start out as very gripping, but as the story went on it became more interesting. I only wish there had been more horse and less of the other side stories but hey, horse-aholic here, no apologies. It was a good book nonetheless and I would 'read' it again.

"Great Narrator, Interesting Story, but Overly Melodramatic"

Fiona Hardingham is such a terrific narrator! It's a pleasure to listen to her tell any story as she makes every character distinctive and adds the right bits of mood, inflection, tone, etc.

This story is interesting. I felt myself rooting for a happy ending for the three main characters, and they are likable despite their flaws.

But I was frustrated by the contrived melodrama. Some actions and choices didn't make sense, especially Sarah's. She asks for money, and money is offered to her, and a few other times she's asked if there's anything she needs, yet she never comes out and asks for the help she needs. It can't be pride else she'd never have asked for the other money. And if we are to accept she's just a messed up teenager who makes dumb choices: well, it doesn't really fit with the rest of her character. Ergo, melodrama. Contrived scenarios made more dramatic by frustrating illogical actions by the characters; the stuff of soap operas. Well everyone makes mistakes, and it may even be realistic for someone to make such dumb choices, I prefer to read about characters who act a bit more sensible so that a dramatic situation doesn't turn into this frustrating show of impetuousness.

    "JoJo Moyes fan"

I have loved every JoJo Moyes book I have ever read or listened to. This one took me a little longer to fall in love with than most (I didn't like the characters as much at first as I usually do in one of her books) but I am so glad I kept at it. One of my favorite endings. Also, Fiona Hardingham was a fantastic narrator.

    "Not my cup of Tea"

I was very bored with this story. I stuck it out till the end in case 3 it got better. ...it didn't. I restarted the book 3 times after reaching chapter 3 because I was very confused. infinally moved on hoping it would make more sense later. by the time I got to chapter 7 I knew this was not going to be a good book if it hadn't goten interesting by now. I was excited to read this book because my cousin recommend it and I love horses. I guess we have different tastes. I think Sara's journey was too long. I was ready to getnto the endnof the journey. The narrator was almost monotone for me as well.

    "Jojo Moyes Latest Book"

I loved her previous books and I would say this book was pretty predictable and ok. I'd have a hard time recommending it.

    "A drudgery to read/listen to"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The story left much to be desired. Basically unlikeable main characters, little real action, way too much drivel about emotions! Poor character development-- they felt rather like cardboard characters dubbed by title of young horseman, neurotic child advocate lawyer with no clue about moving forward or backward or in any direction and hunky photographer who sort of floats along sort of involved but not really, American African American cowboy etc. etc. This is a very early J. Moyes and needed stronger editing. So in short -- nothing would have helped this book

Has The Horse Dancer turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not sure what real genre this is.....

    Which scene was your favorite?

    None

What character would you cut from The Horse Dancer?

Would suggest reading a later J. Moyes book and don't bother with any of the characters in this book.

    Any additional comments?

The narrator did a great job with a very poorly written story. I would listen to her again. I stopped listening 6 hours in --- just could not listen to any more angst. And I asked for a credit refund.

I am a voracious reader of all fiction genres and poetry. I occasionally venture into humor, history, and science. I loathe self-help books.

A bland story that drags on far too long; I won't recommend it or listen again.
