Publisher's Summary

When Lucy Bagshaw's life in Boston falls apart thanks to a scathing editorial written by her famous artist mother, she accepts her half-sister Juliet's invitation to stay with her in Hartley-by-the-Sea, a charming seaside village in Northern England.

Lucy is expecting quaint cottages and cream teas but instead finds that her sister is an aloof host; the weather is wet, windy, and cold; and her new boss, Alex Kincaid, is a disapproving widower who hired her only as a favor to Juliet.

Despite the invitation she offered, Juliet is startled by the way Lucy catapults into her orderly life. As Juliet faces her own struggles with both her distant mother and her desire for a child, her sister's irrepressible optimism begins to take hold. With the help of quirky villagers, these hesitant rainy-day sisters begin to forge a new understanding and find in each other the love of family that makes all the difference.

like a cup of tea

Gentle, sweet, well paced, comforting, and heartwarming. Like settling into a warm bath or having a cup of tea. Really enjoyed this and will listen to it again. Wonderful performance!

This one had to grow on me, but when it did...

Lucy was just a little too whiney and Juliet, just plain mean but I pressed on and fell in love with both sisters. I chose the book for two reasons: first, the cover... beautiful, second, the setting... it did NOT disappoint. I loved Peter! Not thrilled about the narrator's voice for Alex but he was so loveable, I got through it. Honestly, I loved this book I cried like a baby at the end.

Family is where we find it.

Estranged half sisters with a distant mother connect after their lives fell apart. Heartwarming.

Fun love beach read/listen

A great surprise in selecting this book. A story of 2 half sisters with a dysfunctional mom. It’s a story of healing, renewing, finding oneself and family. Fanily that doesn’t need to be blood related

Shocking ending

I persevered through this book all the while waiting for it to get better. The idea was good but wasn’t executed well. I wanted more of a heartwarming story for a rainy day.

Interesting, not fascinating

Not particularly well written performed. Never explicit, if that matters to you . Took me a while to get into the story, to be able to differentiate between the two sister characters and adjust to some of the British elements. More of a relaxing beach read than a thrill ride

Predictable and sappy

I never fully attached to any of the characters. The story line seemed shallow and predictable. All in all, it was a slightly better than mediocre book.

Good story m if a little slow

This is a good, pleasant story that occasionally gets stall in detail. I sometimes despised the central character for her weak decisions, but the other characters were interesting to follow. Great narrator!
