Publisher's Summary

Introducing Wyoming's Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times best-selling author of Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix original series Longmire.

Fans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr, and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times best-selling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming's Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, full of memorable characters. After 25 years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire's hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.

With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

Listen to all of Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire mysteries.

    "It surprised me."
What made the experience of listening to The Cold Dish the most enjoyable?

I read an awful lot (I'm an 11th grade literature teacher), so one of the roadblocks to me truly enjoying a book is when it follows one of Bookers' 7 basic plots too predictably. This book wove a steady protagonist through a twisty, unpredictable plot with a strange mixture of grit and grace.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Ruby and Vic - their sharp, foul mouths keep the pace moving and me laughing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Walt held Vonnie's graceful, long feet - it was so tender and sweet.

"Much better than I expected. Really Excellent!"

This is not the type of story I usually read. Murder mystery? Modern cowboy, sheriff with best friend an Native American. But it was really very good, with a lot of twist & turns. The description of the Wyoming landscape was spot on. I really enjoyed it! I would recommend it to everyone.

    "Wonderful Series"

This series is so well done. The characters are so real and it seems like you could meet them in any town. There is a lot of suspense for mystery lovers. Walt has so many struggles but is committed to solving the cases and helping his colleagues and the townspeople. George Guidall is a fantastic narrator and is marvelous at the various voices, Walt, Henry, Vic, etc. This is by far my favorite series. I don't want to listen to them too quickly though because I will be sad when they are finished.

Held my interest. Kept looking for a chance to listen. Great narrator, and even after I figured it out, there were surprises.

    "A Must Listen"

.... For folks who have picked up and episode of the series ( which don't do the stories justice IMHO) or read one of the books.

The complex characters in the series are introduced and defined in this seminal work. The plot is involved and gripping. And finally, a much deserved hat tip to George Guidall. His performing talents are considerable and his interpretation of each character is flawless. His rendition alone makes the book worth listening to!

    "Wonderfully humorous and deadly serious."

Absolutely loved it. The narrator was a little hard for me to warm to because I've been watching Longmire on cable but by the end of the book I loved him.

"The best way to meet Longmire"
If you could sum up The Cold Dish in three words, what would they be?

    Gripping, funny and surprising

What did you like best about this story?

George Guidall's reading of the book brought it to life so well, it is the first audio book I ever heard that I thought was better than reading it myself. His grasp of the characters is perfect, his timing and voices are impeccable. And Johnson's portrayal of the relationships of the various people in the book, and his humor, made it a great experience. The genuine warmth and affection of the characters for each other was wonderful. I lived in ranching country in Wyoming, and Johnson captured the flavor of that country and that kind of life.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

There have to be two---Walt and the Bear

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I might have liked that but I never do listen to a book in one sitting.

    Any additional comments?

The TV series Longmire is pretty good, but the book, particularly with Guidall's reading, puts it in the shade. This is one series I will choose to listen to rather than read, and I have recommended it to many.
