Publisher's summary

My Man Jeeves, first published in 1919, introduced the world to affable, indolent Bertie Wooster and his precise, capable valet, Jeeves. Some of the finest examples of humorous writing found in English literature are woven around the relationship between these two men of very different classes and temperaments. Where Bertie is impetuous and feeble, Jeeves is coolheaded and poised.

This collection, the first book of Jeeves and Wooster stories, contains eight stories, including "Absent Treatment", "Helping Freddie", "Rallying Round Old George", "Doing Clarence a Bit of Good", "Fixing It for Freddie", and "Bertie Changes His Mind".

Best Narrator, but wish I'd known it was reprinted

I have always loved Jeeves stories, and when I got this collection among my first Audible purchases, it quickly became my fallback whenever I had finished a heavier book and wanted something light to fill in before picking up another. I think I've listened to it at least a couple dozen times now, and I still enjoy it. Sure, I've got the stories practically memorized, and the plots will never surprise me, but they're still worth a chuckle. I only wish I had known that all the Jeeves stories in this book were reprinted in Carry On, Jeeves before I bought that one as well. If buying the books in print, I would rather have had the full Jeeves collection in Carry On, Jeeves, minus the Reggie Pepper stories in My Man Jeeves, which I've never found quite as entertaining.
For that reason, I'd give it two stars if not for Simon Prebble's narration. I think he makes a far better Jeeves than any other I've heard so far, and his renderings of some of the elderly relatives in the stories make it worth listening to some of them twice in a row just to hear a specific passage again. The one that comes to mind most is the uncle's shock and outrage upon seeing the portrait for the first time in the Hard-Boiled Egg. Definitely recommended. If only Prebble had narrated the other Jeeves books on Audible.

Inresting and different

Interesting and different types of stories. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the dialogue. I gave it four stars instead of five stars because the premise of every story is based on lying. There's a lot of suffering going on while the lies and deceit are being carried out, which is what happens when we live that way. I appreciated that depiction.

The narrator did an excellent job!

Prepare to Laugh

I have never laughed out loud so much as I did while listening to this book. Bertie Wooster is hilarious. He is so innocent and kind - always ready to help his friends. The schemes developed to help come from Beritie's man, Jeeves. The schemes usually end up in a disaster, but as Jeeves says: "there is always a way". Jeeves is a perfect example of a man's man. Bertie depends on Jeeves for everything. Bertie's stories are set in New York. There is a second story line going on involving a gentleman named Freddie, which take place in England and other places in Europe. Freddy's man is no where near as talented and likable as Jeeves. Both Bertie and Freddy are very rich, and totally idle. They are well educated, know the right people and places, loyal to their friends, and they both have impeccable manners. The other characters in the book are also fully drawn and their personalities are quickly revealed - wonderful examples of human nature. This book sat in my Library for a long time, but I finally downloaded it. I wish I had done so earlier because it was such a memorable and enjoyable book. Perfect to fill the time during Covid "lockdown". Wokehouse is a talented writer and excellent storyteller.

This version of My Man Jeeves is narrated by Simon Prebble and he is perfect. His voice for Jeeves is exactly what I imagine for that character. His Bertie and Freddie voices are also spot on. I suggest you select this version of My Man Jeeves from the many that are offered. I searched Audible for other books in the series, however Prebble was not the narrator for any of the others. I chose most of the other books in the series (there are twelve or more) and placed them in my Library. They were free, There are several versions and different narrators of most of the books, It is important to listen to the samples before you choose in order to get a feel for the narrator. I picked the ones that were as similar as possible to Prebble's performance. Cannot wait to dive into them.

Hilarious!

Funny and old fashioned! Jeeves is quite the intelligent man, don't you know? Just ask Jeeves.

A Classic Wodehouse Book

Gotta love Jeeves and the great characters Wodehouse created. His works have such believable dialogue and he creates comedy with ease.

Very Good, Sir.

The unflappable, infallible, ever resourceful Jeeves is a wonder. Light comedy with a deft touch that should be mandatory for all at least once in their lifetime.

Fun listen

Any additional comments?

This collection of stories is fun to listen to. I simply can't imagine what Bertie would do without Jeeves.
