Publisher's summary

Miss Julia, a recently bereaved and newly wealthy widow, is only slightly bemused when one Hazel Marie Puckett appears at her door with a youngster in tow and unceremoniously announces that the child is the bastard son of Miss Julia's late husband. Suddenly, this longtime church member and pillar of her small Southern community finds herself in the center of an unseemly scandal - and the guardian of a wan nine-year-old whose mere presence turns her life upside down.

With razor-sharp wit and perfect "Steel Magnolia" poise, Miss Julia speaks her mind indeed - about a robbery, a kidnapping, and the other disgraceful events precipitated by her husband's death. Fast-paced and charming, with a sure sense of comic drama, a cast of crazy characters, and a strong Southern cadence, Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind will delight listeners from first minute to the last.

Miss Julia is a Trip!

I'd listened to this book years ago, but didn't realize it until I was well imp it. Miss Julia is the merriest of widows after her controlling husband dies. But when his illegitimate son shows up, Miss Julia's world is turned upside down. A very clever book with likeable characters.

Great characters set in a charming southern town. I love how Miss Julia has evolved through this series.

Silly, but sweet

Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind grasped my attention and charmed me in the first chapter! The narrator's sweet southern accent and quick speech pattern remained consistent throughout the book. The characters' personalities were all fleshed out quickly and each easy to imagine. On the other hand, some of the scenes droned on and on and were a little farfetched. Still, the book made me laugh out loud a couple times and I just put up with the ridiculousness of some of the plot pieces. The religious characters certainly could be compared to some of the silly, self-righteous, brainwashed, hypocritical people in my life!

A must listen

I can't remember how many times I have listened to this book. I had read it years ago so when I saw it on audible, I knew I had to try it. Extremely entertaining with many laugh out loud places. Well worth the price you pay. I just wish the entire series were available

Great story!

Love the evolution of Miss Julia from a slave to her place and time. To a lady who find her voice and uses it to her advantage.

Not the worst but definitely not the best.

Although the story was a little off at times, it was the narration that made me turn the app to double speed. I just couldn't bear hearing her voice at times. It wasn't necessarily the quality of her voice (although I agree with others that it wasn't suited for an older woman) but the way she pronounced things. And there were no differences between the characters. Just all one voice.

As for the author's ability, I'll have to read another one to decide. Thankfully, they're not narrated by the same person.

and YES there are sequels

But oh no! They changed narrators. Karen White was SO perfect - and I'm from New Orleans. She was perfect in every way and now I just started Book 2 and she's been replaced by a narrator I find absolutely dreadful. She has Lillian the housekeeper speaking in a deep man's voice with an uneducated inflection that i find borderline racist. What am I going to do?
But this is about Book One and it is delightful. Frothy and yet full of plot twists that keep you amused, and you have to love Julia and indeed if you are from the South, you will recognize her as someone you know. Just a fabulous book.

I am especially taken with the excellent narrator who made the characters come alive, and the story kept my I terest, I wanted to know what happened next.
