Story
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly.

Story
Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it's served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops don't knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing what's buried in the Morrows' backyard. But 19-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees.

Nobody knew what happened to Jack in the days that followed - until now.

Pepper is a rambunctious big man, and, suddenly, the surprised inmate of a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York. He's not mentally ill, but that doesn't seem to matter. On his first night, he's visited by a terrifying creature who nearly kills him before being hustled away by the hospital staff. It's no delusion: The other patients confirm that a hungry devil roams the hallways when the sun goes down. Pepper rallies three other inmates in a plot to fight back: Dorry, an octogenarian schizophrenic; Coffee, an African immigrant with severe OCD; and Loochie, a bipolar teenage girl.

Publisher's summary
A taut, psychological mind bender from the best-selling author of I’m Thinking of Ending Things.
We don’t get visitors. Not out here. We never have.
In Iain Reid’s second haunting, philosophical puzzle of a novel, set in the near future, Junior and Henrietta live a comfortable, solitary life on their farm, far from the city lights, but in close quarters with each other. One day, a stranger from the city arrives with alarming news: Junior has been randomly selected to travel far away from the farm...very far away. The most unusual part? Arrangements have already been made so that when he leaves, Henrietta won't have a chance to miss him, because she won't be left alone - not even for a moment. Henrietta will have company. Familiar company.
Told in Reid’s sharp and evocative style, Foe examines the nature of domestic relationships, self-determination, and what it means to be (or not to be) a person. An eerily entrancing pause-resister, it churns with unease and suspense from the first words to its shocking finale.

The Incrementalists - a secret society of 200 people with an unbroken lineage reaching back 40,000 years. They cheat death, share lives and memories, and communicate with one another across nations, races, and time. They have an epic history, an almost magical memory, and a very modest mission: to make the world better, just a little bit at a time. Their ongoing argument about how to do this is older than most of their individual memories. Phil, whose personality has stayed stable through more incarnations than anyone else’s, has loved Celeste - and argued with her - for most of the last 400 years.

She has a brother to take care of; earning a little extra money was not supposed to ruin her life this way. Refusing to live forever in fear of physical contact, Wendy goes straight to the source: the company whose strange energy practices caused her dramatic transformation.

One hot summer night, Lourdes, Fernanda, Ana, Perla, and Pauline hold a séance. Their tipsy laughter turns to terror when the flames burn straight through their prayer candles and Fernanda starts crawling toward her friends and chanting in Nahuatl, the language of their Aztec ancestors. "It is fitting that I'm beginning a new notebook up here. New surroundings and new ideas, a new beginning. Fresh air." This passage is from the first entry of a journal kept by the narrator of Daniel Kehlmann's spellbinding new novel. It is the record of the seven days that he, his wife, and his four-year-old daughter spend in a house they have rented in the mountains of Germany - a house that thwarts the expectations of the narrator's recollection and seems to defy the very laws of physics.

The house sits stoic and slightly askew off the coast of Raven's Head. A real page turner
As with his first book, I could not put this Iain Reid page turner down. In his generally short novels (thus far), Iain provides incredibly intuitive insight into his central characters psyche. There is a constant tension and uncertainty as well as a remarkable sense of place, somehow conveyed without providing detailed specifics about exactly where or when we are. I savored every page. #addicting #pageturner #suspenseful #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

A mastery in “uncomfortable.”
Ian Reid is terrific at writing deeply uncomfortable works, particularly at highlighting something being wrong but you can’t put your finger on what exactly it is. This is a great thriller and worth a listen.

The suspense pulls you along
The suspense pulls you along, makes you eager to keep listening and then it wraps in quite the “ending without an ending” way. Not my favorite story telling technique. But a quick, engaging story to listen to. Could be a good transition book or book slump read.

A thoughtful masterpiece
I’m usually good at guessing book endings well before the end, but this one pulled me in so many different directions I just couldn’t pin it down. I love the setting, an old farmhouse in the midst of a futuristic world, and the characters felt like people I knew or could know. I love Reid’s books and this one has to be my favorite.

Foe
Let me start by saying i thoroughly enjoyed this book. it is slow paced by very well done. Its the story of junior and his wife Henrietta. A man named Terrence comes to they're house one night and tells Junior he's been selected to go on a space station. Also tells him he'll have a replication to replace him while hes gone. I figured out what was going on about 3/4 of the way through but then even delightfully surprised me in the end. I found the performance enjoyable and the voice somewhat soothing. I listen to books or podcast as I go to bed and dozed off a few times. which is credit to the smooth voice.

An excellent, thought-provoking listen
I loved Reid's first novel so I approached Foe with a slight sense of trepidation and high expectations. My worries were unnecessary. Foe is superb, a tautly-written book in which the reader is always on slightly shaky ground. The novel's focus is narrow so the rules and reality of it's near-future setting are often implied but never crystal clear. That's entirely intentional and immensely effective. It's best to go into this story knowing next to nothing about the plot. Pay attention and you will be rewarded.
Reid is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. I can't wait for his next effort.

I prefer Reid’s last novel, but this one toys with some very interesting concepts. It’s all about relationships, and communication.

Several clues. Wish there was more of an ending.
I like the sentence structure and the shortness of the speech. But the story is very open in a few aspects that I wish were explained. Anxiety level 10 at some points with no real justice felt at the end.
