Publisher's Summary

Meet Patrick Cleary: party boy, loser, and spaz. Patrick’s been trying desperately to transform himself, and the results have been so spectacular, they’ve almost killed him.

Meet Wes “Whiskey” Keenan: he’s a field biologist wondering if it’s time to settle down.

When the worst day of Patrick’s life ends with Whiskey saving it, Patrick and Whiskey find themselves sharing company and an impossibly small berth on the world’s tackiest houseboat. Patrick needs to get his life together - and Whiskey wants to help - but Patrick is not entirely convinced it’s doable. He’s pretty sure he’s a freak of nature. But Whiskey, who works with real freaks of nature, thinks all Patrick needs is a little help to see the absolute beauty inside his spastic self, and Whiskey is all about volunteering.

Between anomalous frogs, a homicidal ex-boyfriend, and Patrick’s own hangups, Whiskey’s going to need all of his patience and Patrick’s going to need to find the best of himself before these two men ever see clear water.

I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!

    "Curiosity didn't kill the cat"

STORY (gay/lesbian romance) -- I'm not gay/lesbian, but I was curious. I stumbled on Clear Water in a sale and decided to check it out. I got a little bit too much information, but this cat isn't curious anymore so all is well. I didn't find this book in the gay/lesbian section since I don't shop there, but I will try to review this book for those who do.

Whiskey is 30-something, bisexual and a marine biologist. Patrick is 20-something, gay, has ADHD and teaches yoga. They meet when Whiskey saves Patrick from nearly drowning. Most of the story takes place on a marine research vessel near Sacramento where Whiskey lives and does research on water pollution and marine anomalies.

The characters were likeable, and the romance is sweet. Patrick is pretty screwed up emotionally, but Whiskey is supportive and wants to take care of him. The marine biology background of the story is pretty light, and I would have liked the book much better if there had been more depth in that area. All in all, the book held my interest but, if it hadn't been for "satisfying my curiosity," I would have found it pretty boring.

PERFORMANCE - The narrator had a nice voice and read well, but often he would get lost in a sentence and didn't seem to know what words to accent or where to pause for emphasis. Also he didn't differentiate between characters.

OVERALL - Recommended primarily for gay male listeners. There are several sexual situations but they only last a couple minutes each. Lots of cursing.

    "Ok overall"
What did you like best about Clear Water? What did you like least?

I liked the river boat type of biology was an interesting aspect. Overall it was fluff to me. Patrick seemed as if teenage angst queen. He was written as niave innocent "always kind" person. It was OTT for me. I felt the character was to Disneyesque . Ms Lane writes well, but Patrick was superficial fluff to me. THE best character was Whiskey imo. His study partner was also well developed. I didn't find there to be much mystery but meh still fine over all

Would you be willing to try another book from Amy Lane? Why or why not?

    yes

Have you listened to any of Robert Nieman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I liked his voice altho I do agree with other listeners tht I often had to back the audio up to figure out whom was " talking/thinking" his voice never really changed for the characters. Still was nicely read and has promise.

Was Clear Water worth the listening time?

It was ok, but the storyline really didn't hold me, I found myself drifting away from the story frequently .

    Any additional comments?

I think had great potential not totally delivered in the plot. I just cant give it more than a fair rating.

"Perfect Combo - Reader and Novel"

I bought this e-audio book, because I had previously read and loved the story. It begins when Whiskey Keenan witnesses a car going off a bridge over the river where his houseboat cum science lab is berthed. He realizes there is someone still in the car and swims to the rescue of the hapless passenger, Patrick Cleary. The story follows the trajectory of the lonely scientist and the younger man struggling with ADD in their journey from the imperfect present to a heartwarming HEA. This is a very satisfying ugly duckling story with plenty of feel good moments and lots of love.

But the real reason I am making an effort to write this review...

I've spent literally thousands of hours listening to audio books, borrowing titles regularly from the library. But there is one area where my library falls short and that is with the m/m titles. That is what brought me to Audible. I have listened to only 20 books thus far, but I have to say that the reader for this book - Robert Nieman - stands out. And I mean stands out in the context of my overall listening. His voice is youthful, yet rich and has a charisma that charmed me from the start. While he didn't do separate character voices, per se, his acting was so natural, he brought each of the characters to life and made me feel as if I was right there. I would gladly listen to any title he records. I can't compliment him superlatively enough! <3

    "I'm Listening...."

Excellent! I totally adored this book! Great story of Whiskey & Patrick and their finding each other, completing each other.

There are twists & turns in the book...but you just have to have faith that the author will get you "there" and oh does she ever?

    One of my favorite quotes:
“I don’t want you to stay with me thinking I’m with you because I’m fragile, Whiskey. I want you to know I’m staying with you because I love you and I don’t want anybody else. I want you to know I’m strong—and I want you to be happy. You go on this last thing, this last trip, and when you come back, I’ll make you a home and you’ll take care of me, and we’ll be happy ever after, okay?”

This story /audiobook is easily a 5 star story -- you will fall in love with Whiskey & Patrick, right along with watching them fall in love!

    "Why do I bother"
Would you try another book from Amy Lane and/or Robert Nieman?

Amy Lane - No, Robert Nieman - Maybe.

What was most disappointing about Amy Lane’s story?

I don't know why I bother, after reading three of her books I decided that as much as I like the stories she writes, I cannot stand her dialogue. Her characters are always ranting on about stupid things, or irrelevant things that bear no point to the plot. In this story, the dialogue is too exaggerated for me. Really, why did the dialogues have to contain so much aggression, and then go into off parts with no bearing on the present. I wish she would try to anchor her dialogue in the scene, and make her characters more mature.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I don't think the narration could have saved this book for me.

What character would you cut from Clear Water?

None, I would just cut the dialogue.

    Any additional comments?

Not really, just need to stop buying anything by Amy Lane.

"Not as good as I expected, but a decent listen."
Would you listen to Clear Water again? Why?

Probably not. I did enjoy it but it is not one of the great works of literature of our times that would deserve multiple listens.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Clear Water?

I would say toward the end, when the ex-boyfriend story collided with the current story. Really had me on the edge of my seat for a while.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Try harder to give the different characters a different voice. He was fairly good at this, but at some points in the book it was difficult to figure out which character was talking until after the fact.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Probably the beginning, right after the car crash. Everyone can identify with the hero/Florence Nightingale type.

    Any additional comments?

Overall a fair book, worth a listen, but not the best thing I have heard this year.

    "A Gem"

A special story told with the perfect voice.

The characters are so well developed I felt like I knew them. The love story is tender, sensual, and passionate. I had so much invested in these people the climax had me on pins and needles.

Usually I would enjoy a book like this over at least a week if not two. I could hardly bring myself to stop listening to this. I had to know what happened next. I finished this book in 2 days.
