Some call it purgatory, others know it as the in-between, but for those poor souls who are trapped there eternally it is simply: The Carnival - macabre mockery where night is never-ending, and a sadistic creature known as the Fool rules with an iron fist. And the Fool has one rule: No one leaves the Carnival. Ever. Christopher, the latest arrival thrust reluctantly through the gates, is certain that he doesn't belong there, and he's damn sure he's not going to be staying. To have any chance of escaping, he must confront not only the Fool, but his own dark past.

People call me Father, but I prefer Frank, because I'm the worst preacher you'll ever meet. Days spent completely wasted pull a number on you, especially when you've got a truckload of baggage that comes with it. Until this beautiful girl in the back of the church takes my breath away. And we end up committing sacrilege in the confessional. Bad doesn't even begin to describe me, and after one taste of what she's got to offer, I want more.

Mild-mannered sheep farmer Albert Stark is fed up with the harsh life of the American frontier, where it seems everything and anything can kill you: Duels at high noon. Barroom brawls. Poisonous snakes. Cholera-infected drinking water. Tumbleweed abrasion. Something called “toe-foot.” Even a trip to the outhouse. Yes, there are a million ways to die in the wild, wild West, and Albert plans to avoid them all. Some people think that makes him a coward. Albert calls it common sense.

Story
The Whip is inspired by the true story of Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love with a runaway slave and had his child. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track the killer. Charley became a renowned stagecoach driver for Wells Fargo, during the renowned California 'gold rush' days. She killed a famous outlaw, had a secret love affair, and lived with a housekeeper who, unaware of her true sex, fell in love with her.

Publisher's summary
Alex Issa's thought-provoking stories are difficult to classify. From post-apocalyptic fables tackling restraint in the absence of law, to tales of hit-man morality, his short fiction has challenged listeners and delighted critics with its minimalist sensibilities and ever-present subtext. Here, six almost surreal short stories lead the listener through disturbing and somehow beautiful locations in the mind.
1. Of Princesses and Freaks: Two Short Tales
Bella's Slippers
Locked in the tower, Bella laments her fate, the decisions she made about the liquidation of her mother's estate, and the ambitions that have left her helpless on unforgiving stone with rodents and roaches her only companions.
Big Top Slick
A father explains to his son why running away to the circus isn't the best option in this surrealistic and vaguely philosophical exploration of society, shunning, and human nature.
2. Swings Don't Grow Lonely: A Tale of Endings
Richard, an old man awaiting the end, and Anne, a young girl with burdens no girl should bear, sit on the swings and circle around the only topic of import. In this moving and bleak story of both untimely and timely ends, Alex Issa draws emotion effortlessly and powerfully with the very picture of bittersweet truth.
3. Dancing with Bounties
The Blank Twins, violent bounty hunters, hired usually for their particular ability to forget the "Alive" part of "Wanted: Dead or Alive", lie in wait for a serial killer with 19 brutal rapes and murders to his name. Dark, violent, and strangely comic, the unforgettable and more than a little disturbing world of Alex Issa is sure to please. This thrilling short story is one of many in the Devil Twins series.
4. Dry County (Devil Twins 2)
Michael and Barton Blink are back, and this time, their bounty takes them to, of all places, a town without a drop of alcohol for sale. The Devil Twins are here for a bounty that should be easy pickings, if they could just find a way to get a drink first.
5. Choice of Sanity: A Post-Apocalyptic Fable
In this dark but deeply satisfying story, Alex Issa explores the rights and obligations of men and women in world which has lost all rules. Can a woman refuse to give her body for the repopulation of the race? Is the extinction of mankind justification for rape? Tom, Mischa, and Ed may be the last three people on Earth, and for them these questions aren't hypothetical but real, urgent, and immediate. From its opening sentence to its shocking conclusion, the story unfolds with the stark beauty that only Alex Issa can produce.

In a little dive in a small Israeli city, Dov Greenstein, a comedian a bit past his prime, is doing a night of stand-up. In the audience is a district court justice, Avishai Lazar, whom Dov knew as a boy, along with a few others who remember Dov as the awkward, scrawny kid who walked on his hands to confound the neighborhood bullies. Gradually, teetering between hilarity and hysteria, Dov's patter becomes a kind of memoir, taking us back into the terrors of his childhood.

Story
In a little dive in a small Israeli city, Dov Greenstein, a comedian a bit past his prime, is doing a night of stand-up. In the audience is a district court justice, Avishai Lazar, whom Dov knew as a boy, along with a few others who remember Dov as the awkward, scrawny kid who walked on his hands to confound the neighborhood bullies. Gradually, teetering between hilarity and hysteria, Dov's patter becomes a kind of memoir, taking us back into the terrors of his childhood.

Ben McKelvie believes he's moving up in the world when he and his fiancée buy a house in the cushy Washington, DC, suburb of Barcroft. Instead he's moving down - way down - thanks to Madeleine Roux, the crazy neighbor whose vermin-infested property is a permanent eyesore and looming hazard to public health. First Ben's fiancée leaves him; then his dog dies, apparently killed by a predator drawn into Barcroft by Madeleine's noxious menagerie. But the worst is yet to come for Ben.

I’ll find you. I just need to sift through the story of us to get to where you might be. I’ve got places to look and a list of names. The police have a list of names, too. See now? There’s another lie. There is only one person they’re really looking at, Molly. And that’s yours truly.

Story
Four best-selling authors. One hell-raising premise. What if the dead could be summoned from their graves - for a price? What if a quartet of distinctive storytellers took a stab at this deceptively simple idea - on a dare? The answers lie here, in Four Summoner’s Tales, as these acclaimed writers accept the challenge and rise to the occasion - in four brilliantly chilling ways. It’s all in the execution….

Story
Before senior year, I was forced to move away, leaving behind the only man I have ever loved. He promised he'd love me forever. He vowed nothing would tear us apart. He swore he'd wait for me, but Jack lied. Six years later, when our paths cross again, his broad shoulders, rock-hard chest, and rippling muscles almost make me forget his betrayal. His rugged voice, tempting lips, and sinful smile make it harder for me to deny the feelings I still have for him. He wants to make me his again, but our past may be too much for us to overcome.

Vivid writing, edgy subjects, masterful narration
This collection of stories by Alex Issa is loosely themed around people who come face-to-face with their bitter ends. The writing is vivid and pulpy, which suits the edgy subject matter, and the plots are twisty and well-executed. The stories provide a glimpse into diverse lives: a princess (a la Cinderella) held in a castle against her will; a pair of hard-drinking bounty hunters in search of their quarries; the last three human survivors following the apocalypse.
The narration is superb. Narrator John Feather is a masterful storyteller. His nuanced voice acting really brings the stories to life and adds new a dimension of enjoyment to the material.
