Story
Margaret Renkl presents a devotional of sorts: fifty-two essays that follow the creatures and plants in her backyard over the course of a year. As we move through the seasons—from a crow spied on New Year’s Day, its resourcefulness and sense of community setting a theme for the year—what develops is a portrait of joy and grief. Joy at the ongoing pleasures of the natural world: “Until the very last cricket falls silent, the beauty-besotted will always find a reason to love the world.” And grief at a shifting climate, at winters that end too soon, at songbirds growing fewer and fewer.

And at the feet of its wise Masters, Lanoree Brock learned the mysteries and methods of the Force - and found her calling as one of its most powerful disciples. Julie would remember her happy days at Aunt Cordelia’s forever. Running through the spacious rooms, singing on rainy nights in front of the blazing fireplace. There were rides in the woods on Peter the Great, the races with Danny Trevort. Maybe best of all were the precious moments alone in her room at night, gazing at the sea of stars. But there was sadness too - the painful jealousy Julie felt after her sister got married, the tragic death of a schoolmate, and the bitter disappointment of her first love. The sudden death of the father of the family results in the drastic reduction of the Careys' income and they must leave their comfortable home in Boston. Nancy Carey, the eldest, recalls a vacation in Maine when they all picnicked in the garden of a big, vacant house that her father loved. She discovers that the house is available, the rent is cheap, and persuades her mother that life in The Yellow House in Beulah, Maine is the perfect place to begin their new life.

Story
A country girl named Polly is visiting city friends and comes to realize that this world is quite different than which she has left. Here people are judged according to their dress and manner of speech rather than for their honesty and hard work. Yet all who meet Polly cannot help but be enamored of her; her sweet simplicity is unlike any that they have ever seen, and soon everyone comes to realize that Polly is not someone to be laughed at and ridiculed, but someone to put upon a pedestal for failing to become willing prey to the cynicism of the times.

I Wish This was Unabridged...
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. It was almost like one of those autobiography read by that person. I just wish it had been the complete book. Unfortunately so much of the story is left out in this edition.
Would you ever listen to anything by L. M. Montgomery again?
Yes I have all of the Anne and Avonlea books that are available already.
What does Megan Follows bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Megan Follows (who played Anne in the Sullivan Entertainment movies) reading Anne of Green Gables was like Anne herself telling the story.
Was Anne of Green Gables worth the listening time?
Yes
Any additional comments?
Megan Follows needs to do the full Unabridged version of all of the Anne books.

Abridged, but Megan Follows will always be AnnE
Which character – as performed by Megan Follows – was your favorite?
All. I grew up on the mini-series, so she will always be AnnE to me.
Any additional comments?
The recording is a wee bit fast, but I just slow down the playback speed to compensate. I'm usually not a fan of abridged versions, especially of beloved books, but this was worth the credit. I look forward to acquiring the next two books in the series narrated by Ms. Follows.

I'm a huge fan of Montgomery. I also love the movie Anne of Green Gables movie from the 80's, that starred Megan Follows. Listening to her read the book and knowing the movie so well, made the movie and book converse together in a magical way.

I love this book and Megan Follows’ narration. I have the same version on CD, but it’s unabridged, and I really wish audible had that. The story is great, and is one of my favorites, but I would recommend getting an unabridged audiobook if you want the full experience.
