Publisher's summary

As the snow melts, a disturbing truth emerges.

Colorado mountain detective David Wolf is back in the latest pause-resisting mystery that will leave your heart pounding and lungs pumping for air.

A Rocky Points businessman goes missing, leaving behind an SUV drifted over in snow and a lot of questions for the Sluice-Byron County SD. But the answers are hard to come by, and Chief Detective David Wolf’s personal problems aren’t making investigating any easier for him and his team.

As the temperatures rise in the Chautauqua Valley, the most important clue emerges from the melting drifts. At the same time, Wolf’s memories surface from the shadowy depths of his mind and back into his life. Even for a man with Wolf’s history, dealing with the case and facing his demons head-on proves too much, and Wolf is brought to his knees, both physically and mentally.

Will the valley’s best cop rise again, purified by fire? Or will his ashes drift away on the high winds of the Rockies, leaving behind a justice unpaid?

If you like C. J. Box’s Joe Pickett, James Patterson, Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch, Craig Johnson’s Longmire, and David Baldacci, then this David Wolf Mystery Thriller is sure to keep you listening.

Wolf has got some issues in this one!

First I have to say I think Jeff Carson has written an excellent addition to the David Wolf series with this book.
In Drifted David Wolf is really having some difficulties. Since his fiancé has left him with her daughter in the previous book, Wolf has started drinking again and it's affecting his work. Not to mention his home and health. And oh yea, memory... he forgets a visit with his son and his girlfriend and they have a few surprises for him.
So he gets a one week suspension and must go for counseling. And while all this is going on he's heading up an investigation that his subordinates don't think he's up for.
You think you know what's going on but in the end Carson throws in a super twist that changes the whole direction of the case Wolf is working on.
Sean Patrick Hopkins does an excellent job narrating.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Good story

Written and read well. Hard to like this main character at first. Arrogant, rude, inconsiderate comes to mind. No swearing, gore or sex makes it a pleasant listen even with murders involved.

Fantastic Narrator

I’ve listened to all of the David Wolf stories so far and I just love the narrator. He’s very consistent with the various voices and has a nice strong delivery. As always the story line was very interesting and enjoyable. I really like how the David Wolf, Ratchet and Patterson characters have developed over the series. I’m looking forward to the next book.

Okay book and really good narration, finally..

SPOILERS
I’ve always liked the David Wolf stories but I wasn’t crazy about this one. I didn’t like the problems Wolf had, that led to his heavy drinking, at home and him showing up at work drunk. It went on too long. And when the drunkenness stopped, he started having anxiety attacks. And like almost every stupid man out there he thought he didn’t need any help. Wolf had waaaay too many problems in this book.

I’m going to read book 13 but I hope he doesn’t have so many problems this time.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 5 times.

As to the narration: Sean Patrick Hopkins was so much better in this book.

Seriously?

Jeff - I've read every book in the series. This is by far the worst. It's hard to believe you actually wrote this. I guess you're allowed to mail it in every so often, which you obviously did this time out.

Another great book.

So much sadness and acceptance. David deserves happiness and felt so broken for him.
The suspense and twists in the murders left me unsuspecting until the reveal of the unsuspecting killer to the end.
Can't wait for more of David Wold.

Excellent Action

This was another book with great action, a bit of drama but not as much as the last book. I was hoping Lauren and Wolf would get together but I’m hoping that there’s another gal so he doesn’t have to live alone

No one gets anything past David Wolf

This one hurt my heart a little in the beginning...David's love life is brutal, it's no wonder he has panic attacks.
I'm glad to finally see him back on his feet and doing what he loves...even if he didn't get the girl this time. ;o)

You'd Think He'd be Used to It

David Wolf's love life is a country song. This guy has no luck in love. He can get the girl; it's keeping her that he has trouble with. Having been left in the last episode by his fiancé and her young daughter, both of whom David loved, he's now mired himself in a vicious pity party. He'll bring the booze: everyone should just stay away and leave him alone. It's a private party. He's done this before, then pulled himself up by his bootstraps and moved on. But this time, he's sunk to a depth that's affecting not only his physical health but his mental health as well.

It's not looking good this time. He's in trouble at work, in trouble with friends... even his son is giving him major grief. When he's ordered to seek professional help, that appointment goes just as well as you'd expect. About as well as Sunday dresses at a cow pie throwing contest.

But even in the depths of despair, Wolf's got a confusing case to solve and a killer on the run. From a missing person case to a ring of sex traffickers, Wolf manages to put the pieces together with the help of his diverse cast of co-workers. As far as cases go, this one is elaborate and intriguing. As far as Wolf's personal life goes, this novel shows the uphill battle. It's painful to watch, but it's also inspiring since Wolf actually doesn't have any "quit" in him. That's just a hallucination brought on by alcohol poisoning.

Fans of the David Wolf series will love this story as well. The characters, the plot, the pace, and the WTH moments all work together for a brilliant story. If you're new to this character, it's possible to start here, but it would be best to start with an earlier book since this one so completely builds on the last novel. Best bet? Start at the beginning and get all the history of this enigmatic character.
