Não é possível precisar se foi um ou vários autores quem escreveu a Ilíada e a Odisséia. o que se sabe com certeza é que o nome Homero, significa "aquele que não vê". Mas esta era a designação que se dava a todos os Aedos, que eram aqueles educados para transmitirem a tradição sagrada.
Eram normalmente cegos de nascença e grandes iniciados na tradição profética de Apolo: "Cegos para a luz, eles vêem o invisível", dizia uma inscrição em Delfos.
Eram verdadeiras “bíblias vivas", uma vez que a tradição sagrada não podia ser transmitida sendo oralmente, sendo a escrita proibida, embora fosse muito bem conhecida; estava reservada aos textos laicos, sendo Homero dos primeiros que registrou esta tradição secular na forma escrita.
Hesíodo também o fez e há quem afirme que foi antes mesmo de Homero. (veja "A Teogonia" e os "Trabalhos e os Dias", que também tem um caráter bíblico).
