Publisher's summary

This young adult historical novel, tells the fictional account of young Mary Shirley, who just wants a normal life with friends her age and someday, suitors. She is brave, tenacious, and prone to be rash.

The settlers along Indian Creek in Western Virginia are siding against King George, except Papa. He has declared loyalty and intends to remove the family to Kentucky territory.

After discovering surveys with strange riddles, Mary witnesses her papa exchange documents between a patriot neighbor and a known loyalist. She believes Papa is a cowardly traitor, endangering the family.

Internal struggles lead to lost trust and acts of defiance until Mary is faced with a dangerous decision: Loyalty to Papa or loyalty to a cause. Lives are at stake no matter what choice she makes - one, puts hers at risk.

Defiance on Indian Creek transports listeners to the days of the American Revolution to follow the heart-stirring story of young Mary Shirley, who struggles to find her place in a turbulent world. Troubled by her father’s traitorous activities, the eldest of eight siblings, Mary must summon resolve and inner strength to do what must be done to keep her family safe - putting herself in the path of great danger. Listeners will love Mary and worry for her every step of the way. Defiance on Indian Creek is the first book in what will no doubt prove to be as impacting and lasting a series as Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie books. Amazing Portrayal!

As the author of Defiance on Indian Creek, I'm thrilled that Angelina Kelly chose my book to launch her career as an Audiobook narrator. Her years of experience as a voice actor brings clear pronunciations and confident portrayals of my characters. Hearing the teen voice of Mary interacting with her family and clashing with her papa swells my heart with pride. I hope you enjoy this first Audible audiobook in the Dangerous Loyalties series as Angelina Kelly brings to life the struggles and triumphs Mary revealed to me.

Enjoy with your tween!

What a relief it is to find the story of a brave girl that doesn’t rely on magic to fix imaginary problems!
In this pre-Revolutionary War novel, 13-year-old Mary Shirley is the oldest child in a large family. It’s clear that a lot of research has gone into what life was like for a child growing up on a tobacco farm in 1770’s Western Virginia. The historical details are interesting and don’t distract from the plot.
The story begins with Mary’s father away protecting the settlement from Indians. With winter approaching, she must go out to hunt alone. The hunting trip almost ends in disaster! It won’t be the last disaster averted as we follow along.
I recommend this story for tween girls. Mary isn’t a hero. She’s just a normal kid, in a loving family, trying to do her best at a difficult time in our country’s history.
I purchased the audiobook and - what a nice surprise - Mary is voiced by (what sounds like) a 13-year-old. Listening to this young person tell you about her life made it seem a lot more real and relatable. I’m looking forward to the audiotape of the next book in the series.

Wonderful book!!!

I listened to the entire audiobook in two days. The story was absolutely amazing and the narrator's voice was perfect. If you haven't listened to (or read) the book yet, you should! This historical fiction story was filled with details that didn't slow the pace, and at the same time, I learned a lot too. Great suspense when Mary took the trail alone on horseback. Loved it!

I really liked this Audible book.

I just love history/alternative history and fantasy books. This one shows the similarities between the American Revolution and the Civil War. They really did tear families apart, although there is a HEA in this book. I very much recommend this book. tory: "I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review." A captivating story

"Defiance On Indian Creek " Is not for the weak hearted this story is real it has real characters and real troublesome moments that the colonist and future pioneers experienced. Though I did not agree with everything mentioned I did really enjoy this work of Fiction. It was captivating and raw. which is something that I feel could be explored more in historical fiction. the time setting alone (The late 1700s) is something I have never read about in a work of fiction so that was pretty cool. Another thing that was portrayed correctly was Mary's sense of good vs evil I felt it definitely seemed like typical thoughts of a girl her age. This is nice because I feel oftentimes authors seem to age their characters to fast.

It was okay

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

I thought this story was unrealistic for the age of the main character. She's 13 throughout most of the story. Had she been 15-17, the plot would have made more sense, in what she undertook and in her mature knowledge of the world around her. Regardless, I still don't understand why she made some of the decisions in the story that she did, particularly after you hear her thoughts about the situation. Overall, the characters were somewhat flat, and I didn't find any of them particularly charming, which is a quality you'd want in a children's book series.
