Publisher's summary

Fifteen-year-old Callie isn't speaking to anybody, not even her therapist at Sea Pines, the "residential treatment facility" where her parents and doctor sent her after discovering that she cuts herself. As her story unfolds, Callie reluctantly becomes involved with the "guests" at Sea Pines: other Young women struggling with problems of their own. Although their "issues" are different from hers, Callie is drawn into the group, finds her voice, and, gradually, confronts the family trauma that triggered her destructive behavior.

Cut is a compelling and compassionate look at a young woman's struggle to overcome the impulses that led her to inflict harm on herself.

Critic reviews

"In this extraordinary first novel, Patricia McCormick gives us a painful glimpse into adolescent mental illness...[that] is sensitive and wise. (AudioFile)
"[Clea] Lewis imbues her reading with the cynicism and pain of the book's troubled 15-year-old protagonist, Callie." (Publishers Weekly)
"Actress Clea Lewis does an excellent job of portraying the different characters with her voice inflections. Listeners are drawn into the girls' despair." (School Library Journal)

Loved It

This was my first Audible book, and I really enjoyed it. I wasn’t sure that I would like a book read aloud but the narrator’s voice was so calming. I read the book when I was a child trying to figure out why I did what I did...cut. But listening to it years later on Audible gave me such a new perspective. It was a great “listen.”

Great read

I’ve loved this book for many years and when I found it on Audible I was very excited. Listening to it I fell right back in love with the story. However, I do not care for the narrator’s reading. For a book about very serious subjects it was read very light heartedly. Still, I’m glad to have it in my library.

Sad, but such a good book!

I read this book in high school, I remember this being one of my favorite books as a kid. I relate to the issue in this book as I used to cut.. I guess that's why I like this book so much. I highly recommend this book.

My new favourite book!!

If anyone if going through a hard time—whether it's self injury, eating disorders, addiction, anything really—I believe this story should be the first step of the road to recovery. The story is so realistic to me, and I feel that anyone can mirror it to find success. Good luck!

Okay

This book just simply didn’t have enough story or back story. It was more of a shell of a story, but it wasn’t horrible. It’s a quick listen/read and I did stay fairly interested.

One of my favorites

I love this book. I read it for the first time when I was a teenager living in a residential treatment facility and struggling with self harm. I was able to relate to this book on a personal level and it made me feel less alone.

I do think they could have picked a better person to narrate. She has a nice voice but I think it’s a little flat and doesn’t fit the character.

Important story

Grade: B

Callie doesn't speak. Not to her roommate. Not to the other girls in the treatment center. Not to her doctor. Not even to her beloved little brother. She doesn't know why she can't talk any more and she doesn't know why she cuts herself. But if she's going to start feeling better, she'll have to start trusting those who can help her figure out how.

Written for tweens and young teens, CUT is a good introduction to the problems and treatment for the mental health issues many teen girls face. The girls on Callie's ward deal with substance abuse, eating disorders and self injury, engage in therapy to various degrees. While this short novel is somewhat dated in terms of technology and length on inpatient treatment, young readers may be able to recognize themselves in the characters and seek appropriate help from parents or other adults.

Themes: self injury, eating disorders, substance abuse, inpatient treatment, family

CUT is an appropriate book for advanced readers as young as grade school to early high school students.

FAVORITE!

My absolute all time favorite book. I used to own an actual copy in middle school and lost it. So I love that it's on Audibles ❤❤

GREAT BOOK!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to a friend suited to the theme and topic of the book. The audio quality was quite good, and the story was good too.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that it followed all roots of the main character's (Callie) issues. We saw her get put in an unideal situation and she tried (after a while) to make the best of it.

Which character – as performed by Clea Lewis – was your favourite?

Sydney :)

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me neither extremely laugh or cry, it did get my mind thinking. I did have a tear and a giggle here and there.

Any additional comments?

Enjoy the book!
