Publisher's summary

Utah territory was the destination and home of the Mormon pioneers. Following in the footsteps of founder and Prophet Joseph Smith, Brigham Young led a multitude of followers into the new Zion. Upon arrival in Utah, Young directed the activities of the early Mormons with absolute authority. The Curtis Legacy follows the Curtis family from Winter Quarters in Missouri into Utah. Enos Curtis, the aging patriarch of the family has just lost his beloved wife and is in need of help to raise his family. Tamara Miner has to find a husband or be forced into a polygamous marriage with a man she both dislikes and fears. This unlikely couple marries and begins to carve a niche for themselves in the new territory. Enos, a friend and mentor to Brigham Young, is beginning to ruffle feathers in the Mormon Church with his beliefs in the Bible as the absolute authority and his unwillingness to allow himself, his sons and his daughters to practice polygamy. His relationship with the church and the Prophet himself is further strained by his holding of “blessing meetings” where he teaches from the bible and emphasizes Jesus Christ over the church and its prophet. His son Ezra is a true believer in the Church, but after his father’s death, he is forced to by the Prophet to participate in an act of unthinkable horror, involving murder of men, women and children. Haunted by guilt, Ezra loses faith in the church and begins to seek freedom, not only from the church and its territory, but also from guilt and nightmares. Curtis follows one family through trials, persecution, forced marriage and ultimately, a peace that passes understanding.
