Audible Editor Reviews

Anne Hathaway is nothing short of masterful in her narration of Baum’s beloved classic. As she guides listeners through the world of munchkins, winkies, and quadlings; witches; and the humbug Oz, Hathaway’s impressive vocal repertoire shines. As narrator, she is lithe yet precise; her voice sounds lilting or emphatic, as the story details require. In character, she is spectacular. Each character is filled with personality - a light-voiced Witch of the North; a brusque soldier at Oz’s palace; a monotone, robot-like Oz; and a usually cheerful and genuine Dorothy. The variety enriches the listening experience. Yes, one may know the story well, but Hathaway makes this recording a definitive one.

Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Nominee, Solo Narration - Female, 2013

One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming one of this year’s most anticipated films, The Dark Knight Rises, lends her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.

Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto as they get swept away into the magical land of Oz , where they encounter characters and places you may remember from the movie – and several more that never made it to the big screen – on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City.

“It’s such a wonderful book and I was so happy to be a part of bringing it to life”, Ms. Hathaway said. “There are a lot of great voices in it. The more fun you have with it, the sillier and the more free you get with it, the better it is because it’s a story that can handle it. It’s amazing to be able to discover something new about something you feel you know so well.”

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is part of Audible’s A-List Collection, featuring the world’s most celebrated actors narrating distinguished works of literature that each star had a hand in selecting. For more great books performed by Hollywood’s finest, click here.

    "Classic story, very well read"
What did you love best about The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?

The best part was the narration.

What did you like best about this story?

That it wasn't 1:1 with the film. I've never read/heard the book before, and the additional details were fun to learn (like why the tin man is made of tin, and more about the flying monkeys, and stuff like that)

What about Anne Hathaway’s performance did you like?

Oh, she was excellent. I liked everything about her performance. An excellent narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This isn't that kind of book... but it did occasionally make me laugh, and I guess that moved me.

"My 4 year olds first chapter book"

This is a quirky little tale well narrated by Anne Hathaway. She did an excellent job changing her voice for each character and I found that it captivated my child's attention so that she could listen to 2 chapters at a time and asked for more. It was fanciful but not too complicated for a child to follow.

    "Great story for kids, but..."
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Kids 4 to 8 years old should enjoy this story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I do not have a favorite character in this book.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Anne Hathaway is great for kids books, yet she shows that she does not understand tonality in some of her characters. Accents were completely wrong and caused me to want some of the characters to leave the story and never return.

What character would you cut from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?

    None

Where does The Wonderful Wizard of Oz rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would say it is top 10 for sure

What did you like best about this story?

Anne Hathaway voice was incredible. I think I have never liked someone voice so much. She really puts a lot of character in each one of the voices she does.

Which character – as performed by Anne Hathaway – was your favorite?

hahaha, probably the guard of emerald city... It is the funniest voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Finding out the wizard of Oz was not a real wizard, and how it felt about it really moved me.

"Very enjoyable, with some annoying bits"
What made the experience of listening to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz the most enjoyable?

I had only seen the film (many, many times) and didn't realize that the book would offer such a different experience! There was so much more to the story. It really turned my understanding of the story on its head.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It is very hard to pick a favorite character since I am fond of all of them from my childhood. Who doesn't like the Cowardly Lion or the Scarecrow?

Did Anne Hathaway do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She did a good job of differentiating all of the characters, however some of her voices were terribly annoying. Thankfully, all of the main characters were voiced very, very well. The supporting cast? Very hit and miss. She chose weird Valley Girl, stereotypical "US Marine", and a slobbery speech impediment accent for various characters. Quite a few times throughout the book, I found myself being torn out of the nice, dreamy place I was in and being tossed into the "Anne is so annoying at times" world. The voices, aside from being poor choices, were often simply jarring.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I wouldn't make a film for this book. A perfectly fine one already exists.

    Any additional comments?

Despite Anne's fantastic ability to make us remember that we're not actually in Oz, we're listening to her think up new, annoying voices, this is overall an extremely enjoyable experience.

    "Enjoyed immensely"

When my son saw "The Great & Powerful Oz," he got very Oz-centric. He was 9 when I downloaded this version, and together we listened to it on the drive to/from school. We loved how Ms. Hathaway kept all the voices distinctly different from eachother, but found the Scarecrow's voice just plain annoying.
The only Wizard of Oz versions I'd experienced were the film versions (with their variants), and I'd been wanting to read the source text, but never found the time. Having it read to me (and my son) was a delight.

"Hmm... May have to return this one"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I think children might enjoy the character voices, but it was too juvenile for me.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?

    Silver slippers?!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator tries to make everyone sound different by applying regional accents and it is really distracting from the story. She makes the wizard sound like Ellie from Boarderlands. I couldn't finish the book because I couldn't stand to listen to him talk anymore!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I love the book, just not a fan of the narration.

    "annoying and unprofessional"
What would have made The Wonderful Wizard of Oz better?

    Better narration

What could L. Frank Baum have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The book stands on its own. I've just never read it and didn't love it.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Anne Hathaway?

Someone who would have prepared better instead of making one voice by talking through her nose, another by copying from the movie (Cowardly Lion), another like a sing song New Yorker.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    An American classic.

    Any additional comments?

I wonder if she didn't think this project would be so simple for such an accomplished actress that she didn't find time to prepare.

    "Great story, EXCELLENT performance!"

A fun story. Baum stated that he wanted to create a modern fairy tale in the foreword and he definitely succeeded. A book that will last through time that kids (and adults!) will enjoy. As a sidenote: this audiobook was narrated by Anne Hathaway - and her performance was phenomenal. One of the best narrators I've heard in an audiobook; it sounded like there were numerous people! Great job by her.

Anne Hathaway does a great job of bringing this story to life. She uses different voices to depict the characters and I looked forward to my next instalment each day. The story is good, and there are some variations from the film which is interesting. I will definitely be looking for other books read by Anne Hathaway. My only complaint is I wish it was longer!!!

I guess everybody knows the story about Dorothy and Toto. If not from the movie with Ms. Garland then from reading the story by L. Frank Baum. But hearing it being narrated by Anne Hathaway is another dimension. I loved how she changes her voice to portrait the different characters. The story came to life again for me. I never read the sequels to the book, but this has prompted me to start doing so. I recommend this audiobook to anyone who loves a good story. Being Dutch I also recommend this audiobook to other Dutch people who love to read and hear stories in English.

    "Good reading of a classic"

This is very well read by Anne Hathaway, engaging for the children who listened with wrapt attention. It is a familiar tale to most British children, although some of the scenes are quite frightening for young ones (much as the film is). The story is more elaborate than the film, and has an extended coda.

    "Anne Hathaway's narration is brilliant!"

The first story within this series of children's books which has been immortalised by the film wizard of oz staring Judy garland. As most people are aware Dorothy (and Toto) is transported to a new land following a tornado. There she meets with beloved characters such as the cowardly lion, the scarecrow and tin man. There are enough similarities between the book and the film to delight the reader.

For me the best part of this audiobook was Anne Hathaway’s wonderful narration and different character voices. I found myself howling with laughter from listening to some of her voices, in particular I loved her stork. I’m unsure if this was her intention but for me I completely loved this!

And I have to admit that Anne Hathaway did it perfectly to illustrate the story. It did make me chuckle a few times .
