Awesome narration

The narration on this was fantastic. Listening to Fagan makes your skin crawl - it's that good. I had to get the unabridged version. I can't imagine Dickens with the wonderful commentary cut out. I highly recommend this book and am going to check out what other's have the same narrator.

What an amazing narrator, what an actor, what a delightful pleasure it was to listen to these many voices, to these many characters performed by one mighty talented man.

Brilliant Performance

Oliver Twist is a well told story, and in this case it was narrated fantastically. I don't usually like when the narrator tries to do "voices", but in this case he was great.

Captivating storytelling

Having known only the musical version of this story, I was delighted to really experience the the rich writing of the novel. This particular narrator was fabulous- really colorful voice infused with humor and weight, and gave life to all the characters expertly. What a treat!

Absolutely wonderful

What made the experience of listening to Oliver Twist the most enjoyable?

I have never read or seen the entire story, so this was a delight. Martin Jarvis brought the characters to life and was consistent throughout the whole story. I wouldn't even think of giving this anything less than 4 stars.

Dickens is a genius

But this story is a little too heavy with filler and not enough oliver. David Copperfield was better. This story is hard to follow sometimes

A classic story read to perfection

Martin Jarvis, in my very humble opinion, makes the audio books that he reads come alive brilliantly with each characters voice that he creates. As someone else said in another Dickens review, ‘It’s as if there where 20 actors on stage and they were all him’. So ‘Oliver Twist’ was no disappointment to me and I can thoroughly recommend this classic story read by a man who is master of his craft.
Just to point out that the Audible title ‘Oliver Twist Part 1’ is a little confusing. Part 2 is included in the download. You will have the complete book.

W Martin Jarvis

Would you consider the audio edition of Oliver Twist , Part 1 to be better than the print version?

I have not read the book

What other book might you compare Oliver Twist , Part 1 to, and why?

Other Dickens' s novels

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Where the beadle was present

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh sometimes

Any additional comments?

Martin Jarvis is great!Per uno straniero è utile poter ascoltare i libri inglesi classici letti così chiaramente, sembra che ci siano più attori a leggere e non solo uno. Veramente strepitoso

So much more than the films

I like to listen to Dickens stories when driving, especially when driving long distances. Dicken's use of language is always a delight and the names of his characters bring a smile to my face. I also tend to choose those books that have Martin Jarvis as the narrator because he brings the characters to life just by the different voices and accents. Oliver Twist is a much longer book than I thought from watching the television adaptations and the films. More happens after the failed burglary than I realised.

Excellent Reading

It's been a long time since I read this myself, but I can say I really enjoyed listening to it, at one pointy nephew and niece were both captivated by the story, at 6 & 7 years, I believe this is very telling. So their mum will also be investing in audio books...

Dickens + Jarvis = Brilliant

What made the experience of listening to Oliver Twist the most enjoyable?

Martin Jarvis makes this well-known tale come to life by the vividness of his characterisation and breadth of expression. He is unmatched as a narrator of Dickens' prose, which is, as always, a treasure trove of delight.

Brilliant

if, like me, you have long felt a Dickens-shaped shortfall in your reading experience, you could not do better than pick up this narration. Martin Jarvis's narration is simply magnificent - bringing everyone of the wonderful characters to life - his Brummie Mr Bumble, and Fagin, especially good.

what he brings out is how funny a writer Dickens was, and how completely absorbing his characters. the villains are all delicious, the heroes beautifully enfoibled, (the weakest character of the lot is Oliver himself - he's a proper little milksop).

The achievement is surely Dickens's, but boy does Martin Jarvis succeed in bringing it to vibrant life.

Fantastic narration

What made the experience of listening to Oliver Twist the most enjoyable?

The narrator was exheptional! rarely the voices are so distinct when there are as many carracters as there are in this book. I really enjoyed it!

What other book might you compare Oliver Twist to, and why?

Difficult to compare.

Have you listened to any of Martin Jarvis’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No, first listen, but will surely purchase other audiobooks read by him

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Much too long, but it did keep me up at night!

Way more complex than I thought

I never had to read this in my school years, and wonder how any of us did. Was very well narrated with the voices helping make the times and conditions really clear. What a time to live in, and no wonder so many emigrated.
