The holidays are upon us, and this year Audible is very happy to present to our members one of Charles Dickens’ most popular Christmas stories, The Cricket on the Hearth. This holiday classic (original subtitle: “A Fairy Tale of Home”) tells the innocent, picturesque, and charming story of a poor family and their would-be guardian angel; in short, a delightful vision of Victorian Christmas. As always, a great story calls for a great voice, so we’ve brought in legendary actor and record-breaking Audie and Grammy award-winning narrator Jim Dale ( The Night Circus). Happy holidays and happy listening!

One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. This favorite book for children, based on the author's own youthful experiences, describes the family life of the Marches in a small New England community. Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy are raised in genteel poverty by their loving mother, Marmee, while their father serves as a chaplain during the Civil War. The story explores their domestic adventures, their attempts to increase the family's income, their friendship with the neighboring Laurence family, and their later love affairs and destinies as women.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Publisher's summary
Audible Studios presents a brand new recording of Charles Dickens' timeless seasonal story A Christmas Carol, performed by Hugh Grant.
First published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and unpleasant man who dislikes people generally and Christmas especially.
One Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and given a glimpse of the many homes and lives which Scrooge has touched in his wretched life to date. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.
Featured Article: It’s a Wonderful Life—Book vs. Movie
It's a Wonderful Life is widely acknowledged as the best Christmas film of all time. So, it's kind of hard to believe that when the film premiered in 1946, it was considered a near-flop because it didn't find immediate financial success. It wasn't until the advent of television programming and a clerical mistake in licensing that It's a Wonderful Life was played on TV, again and again, propelling it to become an enduring favorite among audiences, especially at Christmastime. But like the film's origins, "The Greatest Gift," the story that inspired it, also had a fraught beginning.

HUGH GRANT MADE THIS FANTASTIC!
I have read or heard the Christmas carol so many times I don't believe I could count them. Patrick Stewart did a stellar job, and so have many other really talented narrator's but I have to say, Hugh Grant made this story human and touchable and so uplifting and so much fun to listen to that from now on, he is my favorite bringer of Dickens at Christmas!

Exceptional Performance
Hugh Grant provides a masterful performance of this Christmas classic. No matter how many times and how many film/TV versions you have seen, there are humorous and moving nuances to the written text that do not come through in even the finest productions. I recommend this Audible production of the Dickens’ novel unreservedly.

Unfortunately, Hugh does not bring his acting abilities to this performance. If you like having a story read to you, Hugh reads well. If you are looking for a more animated version of this classic, Tim Curry’s performance is much better.

i think I have all of the "Christmas Carol"s from Audible, and enjoy them immensely. This, however, is the best. It is perfect. It's Charles Dickens as Charles Dickens would have read it, I'm sure.
I would now like Audible to engage Hugh Grant to read the rest of the Dickens canon. Seriously.

An excellent tail let down by a Poor narration
I came across this free gift whilst browsing the audible bestseller lists. I love a Christmas Carol, it’s sheer magnificence, power and emotive force keeps me coming back to read every year so when I came across yet another recording, I was excited as I own several. First, the recording appears to be very short and I know why, Hugh Grant reads the book as if he needs to get as much said in the shortest possible time. This does not leave any scope for him to use his undeniable voice acting talent to give the book the emotive force and the characters their individual voices. It feels to me as if he is just reading the book and rushing through the story, paying little attention to the undeniable Roth of Jacob Marley, the tenderness of Christmas past, the merriness of Christmas present and the bleakness of Christmas yet to come. I was fortunate enough to download the Tim Curry presentation audible released in 2009 and this version falls a long way short of that standard. By all means collect this as a freebie however there are better performances out there for discerning listeners of this undeniable classic.

Christmas in 1840 Victorian England
What a wonderful insight into an 1840 Victorian England Christmas Mr Charles Dickens gifts us in four primary themes.
1. The Christmas Spirit - through the eyes of Fred (the Nephew), Mr Fozziwig (the generous commercial entity) and Scrooge (a man of approx 50 years, who had dedicated his life to industry, making money and keeping away from poverty - though his frugal life likely resembled being poor in spirit)
2. Poverty and Social responsibility.
3. The importance of Family and
4. Redemption, in order to redeem himself all he has to do is make a choice. The choice he makes provides him with a change to his reputation and the intangible warmth of merriment from his fellow man.
Hugh Grant's reading of this novella was impeccable.
A highly recommended audible book of Charles Dickens 'A Christmas Carol".
