Publisher's Summary

One of Dickens’ earlier works, dating from 1839, this novel charts the fortunes of an honorable young man, Nicholas Nickleby, who has set out to make his way in the world. Dickens presents a remarkably vivid display of Victorian characters and the lives they lead, from the generous to the fated to the crushed. Hope springs eternal, however, and righteous persistence brings rewards.

Best narrator I've ever heard

I bought this just because of the narrator. Like watching a play - he brings the story to life so well.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I was humbled by the reader's awareness of the piece and his ability to covey it. worth a hundred of my college courses on dickens. dickens ain't too shabby either of course.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ralph. Tho as a kind of caricature of heros, Nick is pretty good too.

What about David Horovitch’s performance did you like?

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

yes and neither. see above.

Great Narration

I’ve always loved this story but David Horovitch’s performance was spectacular. He made each character with its own tone, accent, and nuance so real that I’m left bereft now the book is finished. Dickens wrote a masterpiece and Horovitch brought it to life. Brilliant.

jumpy and wordy

The narrator did a phenomenal job; differing the voices, tone, and inflection.
The story was a chore

Dickens at his most tedious

If you want to read Nicholas Nickleby, you'd much better stick to print, where the long-winded prose can be skimmed at will. As an audiobook it is a marathon. The novel abounds in bombastic moralism but lacks the wit and drama of Dickens' better works.

David Horovitch's performance is generally excellent, occasionally overplayed (in keeping with the spirit of the writing), but can't redeem the book.

A wondrous performance

I'm totally in awe of the narrator. I've known and loved the book (and the 7 hour play!) for years. Yes, it's mixed and has some long and some unnecessarily moralising parts. But it's such a Dickensian joy. I imagine Dickens himself performing passages from it. And he could not have done better than David Horovitch. The voices were comical, moving, terrifying. The timing was perfection. I laughed and cried. Bravo!

Highly recommended.

Enjoyed every moment of this book. David Horovitch's narration is superb. It is hard to believe that such a wide variety of characterisations are the product of one person. His command of tone and accent are flawless. Amazing performance. Dickens' engrossing tale is stunningly brought to life here. Loved it. Thank you Mr Horovitch!

Good narration and an excellent novel!

I was a bit sceptical about the narration on first hearing but eventually I grew to like it and enjoyed the excellent story. Only downside was John's Yorkshire accent as it was a bit unintelligible at times. Otherwise a great many hours thoroughly enjoyed.

Hilarious and heart wrenching

A story that will take you through emotions of hilarity and sadness, the narrator is so good, taking on all the characters and not failing in their likeness.
A definite recommendation.

Character after character..

Dickens captures the thinking of men, women and children of all ages . The book is full of the most wonderful characters , Raith Nickleby and Mrs Nickleby being my personal favourites. The narrator does a tremendous job of bringing everyone to life and never repeats the same voice . A great book and a great narrator to do it justice

The best book ever written!

Nicholas Nickleby is certainly one of Dickens’ finest and as such must qualify it as one of the best novels ever written. The hallmark of a great book is the “satisfaction” it gives to reader. This book hits that spot with perfect precision. Added to all of this the superb narration by David Horowitz makes for a majestic Audible experience.

Stunning narration of an equally stunning novel

If every story was narrated and every story coupled with an ending as this one is and does, the world would be a better place. :-)
