Publisher's Summary

The Pixar Touch is a lively chronicle of Pixar Animation Studios' history and evolution, and the "fraternity of geeks" who shaped it. With the help of visionary businessman Steve Jobs and animating genius John Lasseter, Pixar has become the gold standard of animated filmmaking, beginning with a short special effects shot made at Lucasfilm in 1982 all the way up through the landmark films Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, and others.

David A. Price goes behind the scenes of the corporate feuds between Lasseter and his former champion, Jeffrey Katzenberg, as well as between Steve Jobs and Michael Eisner. And finally he explores Pixar's complex relationship with the Walt Disney Company as it transformed itself into the $7.4 billion jewel in the Disney crown.

    "More about gears than heart"

Going into technical detail like a stereo manual, court room and corporate minutia like a WSJ editorial, I was disappointed this didn't go into the heart of the creators of the finest films. Pixar knows the human heart as shown in their stories. However this book takes an often clinical look at a feeling soul. The performance is done well for the content but it overall was not what I expected. Interesting but not moving.

    "Love Love Love This Book!"

Ok, I admit it, I'm a movie and digital graphics geek. So to me this book was SUCH a treat. I'm pretty familiar with Pixar the movie company, and their history there, but what was so interesting was the decade or so leading up to their first film! And then learning about many of the behind-the-scenes people from Pixar that you probably don't know about.

Anyhow, very very well researched, and a story well told. The story takes you up past the Disney-Pixar merger, and the release of their film "Cars". You also learn quite a bit about George Lucas and Lucasfilm, Steve Jobs, and Disney along the way.

I am so glad that I got this book. You know a book is good when you feel a sense of loss when it is over.

"A little interesting -- but tiring after a while"
What did you like best about The Pixar Touch? What did you like least?

It is fascinating to know how little could be done in the early days. Even the most rudimentary computer animation took massive computers and completely new algorithms. Some of the behind the scenes information around story creation of Toy Story, Monsters, and Nemo was interesting as well.

Would you recommend The Pixar Touch to your friends? Why or why not?

For someone interested in computers, animation, or programming -- probably so. For others, it might be too dry/boring.

Was The Pixar Touch worth the listening time?

Just barely. I had to leave it and come back to it a week later a few different times to make it through.

    "A great insider view"
If you could sum up The Pixar Touch in three words, what would they be?

    Informative, creative, deceit

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Pixar Touch?

The way everyone came together with a common goal

What about David Drummond’s performance did you like?

    Good easy listening

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The guys that went to school together ended up forming some of the household software/design companies today

    Any additional comments?

This is a great book to learn about the history of the pioneers of computer animation, particularly interesting to see this side of the story and outsiders views on the Disney corp after reading the Walt Disney biography. The book has some interesting facts and is an easy passive listening experience.
