Story
Sean Hudson thought nothing of hopping a fence to dig illegally for Native American arrowheads, spear points, and other artifacts. Did his thieving, trespassing ways get him killed? How else to explain the small pickaxe that was found sunk deep into his skull? Blanco County game warden John Marlin has dealt with these kinds of looters before, so it's no surprise when the sheriff asks him to assist with the investigation. Marlin quickly learns that this case - like the soil at a dig site - has many layers.

Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

Story
Stormy Weather centers on the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. The devastation of the storm has attracted crowds of voyeurs and impostors to Florida. Drawn by the chance to prey on Andrew's victims, misfits like the murderous ex-con Snapper and the dangerously seductive Edie find easy targets for their insurance scams. They're not prepared, though, when they meet their opposition, led by a hoary ex-governor who smokes toads.
Both hilariously funny and deadly accurate, Carl Hiaasen's novel will take you into a Florida that is far from the frilly palms and pink flamingos of its post cards.

Story
When a young woman is found brutally murdered in her own apartment with an intricate pattern of lines carved into her face, Copenhagen police detectives Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner are assigned to the case. Soon, they establish a link between the victim, Julie Stender, and her landlady, Esther de Laurenti, who’s a bit too fond of drink and the host of raucous dinner parties with her artist friends. Esther also turns out to be a budding novelist - and when Julie turns up as a murder victim in the unfinished mystery she’s writing, the link between fiction and real life grows.

Got hooked on series when Jonathan Davis was the reader. The current reader, RK Ross, just does accents. Davis brought characters to life. This book another fun story from Rehder. All the fun and nuance ruined and lost by the reader.

Great Fun Read - Awful Narrator
Would you consider the audio edition of Bum Steer to be better than the print version?
Go Print... Ben Rehder always offers up a fun read with great characters and Bum Steer is no exception. However narrator Ross makes the characters sound inane and stupid.
What did you like best about this story?
The Blanco County series is always a trip home for me...
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Blanco Texas is a hour from Austin but narrator Ross makes these folks sound like silly hillbillies. The character voices sound like parodies of Captain Kirk, Bob Dylan and southeastern hillbillies. The females especially sound absurd with breathy voices and extended vowel pronunciations that no one from Texas uses.. Bring on a narrator that "talks Texan"

Entertaining listen from this author
I do love Ben Rehders ideas for stories in the Blanco County series, and the narrator makes you feel as if you are there in Blanco County watching the hapless duo, Red and Billy Don find their way through another series of events. They are always a little smarter then you (the reader) and game warden John give them credit for!

Narrator: Robert King Ross
Another mystery in Blanco County and Red & Billy Don find themselves in the thick of it once again, I really enjoy these two.
As with the other stories it swaps between characters a lot and there are twists and turns as all the pieces pull together to solve the mystery but the storyline is easy to follow. With humour, good characters and a decent plot this series doesn’t get old.
This narrator is ok but he does tend to make the characters sound more like mafia than anything else.

You won't be steered wrong by getting this book
I enjoyed this book. I found it easy to follow, despite having a number of story lines and jumping from character to character as the story unfolds. This is book nine and is a good example of why the series is still going strong and fans keep returning to Blanco County. With the authors unique sense of humour and understanding of the characters the story hooks you from the start and you never know where the story will end up. The characters are always entertaining and colourful and you can always count on certain ones to cause or get into trouble but at some point there luck has to turn, right? Not sure why the main character of John Marlin hasn't applied for the deputy job because he does more investigating for the sheriff than he does being a game warden but it still works. Off to start the next book.
Game warden John Marlin is called in help when a woman's body is found under the dead body of a bull. Was she trying to steal the owners cattle? A prank gone wrong? Or just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time? The only person who might be able to shed some light on the death is the victims boyfriend but he has gone missing, despite his truck having been seen in the area several times. Why is he staying in the area? Staying with family or just hiding from the dead woman's violent brother? Can John find out what really happen the night she died? Meanwhile poachers Red and Billy Don are having there own problems as they get ready to go to Vegas to win it big at the black Jack tables. It seems someone has it out for Red and is taking pot shots at him. What could he have possibly done now that would make someone want to kill him? Red and Billy Don set there own trap to find out and capture more than they were bargaining for.
I like the narrator and have grown use to his delivery of the story.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
