The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Lucas Davenport novels delivers “a page-turner with a new hero, [and a] breakneck pace" (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

Former senator Lincoln Bowe, a Republican, has been missing for several days, setting off alarms on both sides of the political aisle. Finally, he is discovered in the remote Virginia woods, barb-wired to a tree, burned almost beyond recognition and missing his head. Democratic "research assistant" (read: fixer) Jacob Winter, ex–Army Intelligence, wounded in Afghanistan, is called in by the Democratic president to unravel an extremely messy situation and shield his office from any hint of scandal. As this runaway train picks up speed, innocents are murdered, and the guilty come to Jesus. . . .

"Sandford is a master at creating believable, indelible characters like Winter. . . . [He] is peerless when it comes to economical, taut plotting, most notably at building tension. Dead Watch is anything but politics as usual.”—San Antonio Express-News©2006 John Sandford; (P)2006 Penguin Audio, a member of Penguin Group (USA) Inc., and Recorded Books, LLC. All rights reserved. Listened to the Night Crew by Sandford and was somewhat disappointed. So I didn't start this listen with great expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. Jacob Winter is a character I wouldn't mind in a series. The late senator's wife was very unlikeable and Sanford could drop her if he'd prefer. Given what we're learning about the swamp in D.C. (and government in general), this storyline was very believable. Bring Jake back.

Nearly as good as the Prey series

I wish it were part of a series. Loved it! Listened to it twice.

Excellent story.

After reading the Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers series I hoped this book would be at the same compelling level. Sadly, no... Jake pales in comparison and I lost interest in the mystery. Hopefully another Davenport or Flowers book is coming!

I have read pretty much everything that John Sandford has written, starting with the Prey series, the Virgil Flowers series, etc. In that context, "Dead Watch" has to be either his very best ever or in the top 3. We readers absolutely must have more of Jake Winter!! He would be a good successor to Lucas Davenport, who although still a great hero, is getting a little long in the tooth for all the rough stuff. Perhaps Madison Bowe and Jake could open a private detective agency, or team up with Novotny (?sp). Keep them coming, please!

I really enjoyed this story and the narrator. I've been a fan of John Sanford for years and it seems he just keeps getting better.

Great listen!!!!
