Employer? Employee? Leave this book by your bedside!

This book is a well-referenced, comprehensive guide for both employer and employee. It’s much easier to put steps for improvement into place if you are supported at work. So buy a copy for you AND your boss.
As a past school principal, I have worked on both sides of the burnout problem. I would have been able to make very good use of this book, which is actually a guide. It is a book to read with pen in hand, to circle, underline and otherwise mark the passages that speak to you directly. They will draw a path that matches your needs on the way to avoid or repair burnout. Including references to professional help if you need it. What I really like about this book is that it shows many paths to the end-goal. As the author says at the book’s closing, “Good Luck”!

The Reality of Burnout

I’m a retail pharmacist, the epitome of workplace burnout! With extremely high metrics and expectations, inadequate staffing practices, and just downright MEAN customers every single day, the pharmacy industry is a recipe for disaster! This book shed some light on an area in so much need for revamping. Reducing expectations, providing adequate staffing, and allowing pharmacists to do the job they spent YEARS in education for would be LIFE-CHANGING for us! This book taught me skills I’ll implement and keep moving forward. Setting boundaries for myself, knowing my limitations, prioritizing, not getting emotionally invested in the environment I find myself in, and leaving work at the workplace are all lessons I’ll carry with me.

THE reference guide

After you finish reading this book, you come to realize that this will become THE reference for anything related to work-related stress and burnout: the author describes the symptoms, the challenges, a concise program on how to best tackle the issue of burnout, and adds easy tips on how to actually address the problem. For employees struggling with burnout, the book points out how companies with Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), might offer ways to help employees cope with these issues and get back to being happy, committed, and productive employees. Kudos to the author!

A Must-Read (for Managers Too!)

This terrific book on workplace burnout takes a thorough and innovative approach. In addition to talking to those who suffer from burnout, the author devotes quality time to educating managers. After all, a manager who wants excellent and efficient work needs engaged employees, and this book explains the many factors that can contribute to burnout, how a manager can address those factors, and even how to be a supportive manager with respect to different personality types. Of course, the book isn’t written just for managers, and someone who suffers from burnout or even thinks that burnout is the cause of low energy, a desire to withdraw, recent bad habits, or other signs and symptoms will appreciate the author’s extensive research on (and personal experience dealing with) burnout.

The author also offers practical advice on how to address burnout once it occurs, including a particularly helpful chapter on setting goals, being willing to learn and grow from setbacks, avoiding catastrophizing and discounting the positive, practicing gratitude and kindness, and more. In addition, the author devotes five chapters to concrete lifestyle changes that are linked to improved mood and energy, including a highly useful discussion of the established link between proper nutrition and avoiding or coming out of burnout.

A particularly nice touch towards the end is the author’s recommendation that the listener seek professional help if the advice in the book hasn’t helped. Too many people refrain from seeking professional help for their mental health because of stigma, and (as the author points out) people who are not suffering burnout can be particularly dismissive. Many different types of professionals are described, along with how each one may be able to help someone deal with burnout or its symptoms.
