Publisher's summary

One of the most anticipated autobiographies of this generation, Arnold Schwarzenegger's Total Recall is the candid story of one of the world's most remarkable actors, businessmen, and world leaders.

Born in the small city of Thal, Austria, in 1947, Arnold Schwarzenegger moved to Los Angeles at the age of 21. Within 10 years, he was a millionaire businessman. After 20 years, he was the world's biggest movie star. In 2003, he was elected governor of California and became a household name around the world.

Chronicling his embodiment of the American Dream, Total Recall covers Schwarzenegger's high-stakes journey to the United States, from creating the international bodybuilding industry out of the sands of Venice Beach, to breathing life into cinema's most iconic characters, and becoming one of the leading political figures of our time. Proud of his accomplishments and honest about his regrets, Schwarzenegger spares nothing in sharing his amazing story.

Such a human story - but what a human!

I really enjoyed this autobiography. Arnold is candid about his experiences, goals and how he achieved what he set out to achieve. He narrates the first and last chapters, I just wish he could have done more because it's all the more real in his iconic accent.

This incredibly driven man shares his life from his starting out body building, doing time in the army as a tank driver, moving to America, getting into real estate, becoming an action movie actor and defining the genre, to becoming governor of California.

This was money well spent. I've complimented my reading by watching all of his movies in chronological order which is also quite a ride!

A true inspiration

A great book, it is a long journey but it worth every second. I could see a raw Arnold, an outstanding man driven by his vision.
the performance was great as well, Lang could turn a almost 24 hour audio book into a great experience

Surprised and delighted!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to a friend. Prior to listening to it, I saw Arnold as a one-dimensional, big, action-hero-guy. Sure, he has an ego and has definitely done some not-so-politically-correct things in his day. But like all people, he is multi-faceted and has a kinder, gentler, more human side. No major mud-slinging in this book, just a good, straight-forward story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Total Recall?

His passion for fitness! Not just for himself, but for kids. He describes his involvement in Special Olympics and the President's Council on Physical Fitness. His enthusiasm when talking about this subject was inspiring.

Which character – as performed by Stephen Lang and Arnold Schwarzenegger – was your favorite?

I loved the parts read by Arnold himself. I could just picture him sitting in a comfortable chair and spinning his story while smoking a cigar. A little harder to understand with the accent, but worth it. Stephen Lang is a good narrator, but there is something about hearing a person's story from their own lips that makes it extra special.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was surprised about the joy he expressed when talking about his body building days. Emotion in a hulking body builder? So simple, though there was strategy in competition.

Any additional comments?

I appreciated how he treated Maria (and others) in the book. He was kind and respectful of her and her family. I found it interesting that he could "compartmentalize" his life, a life in three acts as it were. Body builder, actor, politician--what will he do next? I can't wait to see!

great book! and inspiring. I highly recommend it. The reader did a fine job, but it's still a letdown after Arnold's intro. message to Arnold, put in the work and read your whole book. set yourself apart as you did most of your life.
