Conversations about Winning Bodybuilding

I was with Franco Columbu when this audiobook was recorded, and we realized early on that Franco's English was much more easily understood when he talked than it was when he read. So we decided that I would read parts of the book and then ask him questions, and he would explain the text in his own words.

We were very careful to follow every paragraph of the book to make sure that nothing was left out. If you listen to the audio book and read along in the paperback or Kindle version, you will see that all topics are covered.

Franco gives an incredible number of helpful suggestions for bodybuilding. He knows from experience, and his insights are offered with wit, amusement and a genuine concern for helping others to achieve bodybuilding success.

One reviewer has called the book "garbage," which is grossly unfair to Franco. He complains that Franco told too many stories about his times with Arnold in the old days, but it was those of us in the recording studio who kept asking him to tell more of those stories. A number of people have complained to me that they wanted more of those stories.

I wanted to call the book, "Conversations about Winning Bodybuilding," rather than "Winning Bodybuilding," but the algorithm that Kindle and audible use requires that the original book title stay the same.

A Wonderful Book................STILL!

I purchased this AUDIO book through AUDIBLE on the recommendation of a friend. This friend is about my age and is in fantastic physical. Having had 10 spinal surgeries in addition to issues with shoulder, hands, hip......... And fighting Leukemia, I thought it would be a better thing to be in better general physical condition. In the very beginning, I thought my age ( nearing 70 ) and being overweight would really preclude me from any type of physical conditioning......... Well I was wrong.

As I started listening to this book, it sounded familiar. This was a book I had read many, many years ago! I still do have a great memory, but now it's very short! I remembered it helped me all those years ago and now.......it has encouraged me to get in shape again........ So I went from 214 lbs to 170lbs over the coarse of a year and have been following Franco's advice. I'm not ready for any bodybuilding competition.......... No Mr America in my future But I feel so much better following the wonderful information in this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get into or back into better physical condition. Even us older guys.........I would recommend going to your Doctor and getting the "ok" to pursue lifting.

For those who love learning the history!

I usually don't care for books that are done in an interview style format, however this one is the exception! It was extremely informative! for those of you that love to hear the old dungeon, where the blonde bomber. Frank Zane. Arnold in the other greats used to lift, this book is for you.

One of a kind champion, Franco, a giant of a man!

Great book and advice from Franco, a man I've looked up to since the late 70's. He truly lived the American dream and contributed so much. I am happy Franco provided all the valuable info in this audio, and I will be incorporating most of it into my workouts. Can't wait to read his other books.

Great book!... if your a bodybuilding fan.

The book was outstanding and gave tons of untold tips and methods and Franco even shared some really entertaining stories. Yes Franco has a thick accent but the interviewer was absolutely wonderful at clarifying what Franco meant to say. If you’re a bodybuilding fan this book is a must. RIP Franco.

Informative but...

I was expecting more of a narrative and less of a Q&A. If you are looking for Franco's story, this isn't it. if you are looking for a director's cut of it, then have a blast!

Great interview, not an audiobook

Absolutely loved the interview but this should be something entirely separate than an audio version of the book. Maybe a paragraph per chapter was read and the rest is an interview. Lots of great stories but not as much information as I was hoping to hear and a lot of outdated/unproven claims about fitness, nutrition, and exercise.
If you’re a Franco Columbu fan, it’s definitely worth a listen but just understand it’s an interview, not a book.

Really great book with lots of training tips and stories from the “Golden Years” of bodybuilding. RIP Franco. You’re a legend in our sport.

Could have been better.

Tad disappointed with the book. On reflection it should not have been an audio book. The contents did not come across as well as it’s intent. It’s a common knowledge that Franco and Arnold are best of friends, it therefore follows that there will be lots of praising towards Arnold. The book title is Winning Bodybuilding and should have refrained from over praising and referencing of Arnold and sticking to the subject. On that basis I have given it a low rating.

Fascinating book

This is really a 6 hour interview with Franco Columbu covering much of the history of modern bodybuilding and his experiences. As you would expect Arnold appears in many of the stories.

He has fascinating insights across all areas. His thinking around which exercises to do and when is really interesting. I found the various comments around steroids and other drugs very interesting.

One of the best stories is around how he got Sylvester Stallone ready for Rambo 2. I won’t spoil it by repeating it here.

I expect this would be better to listen to with his body building book to hand. He highlights a few things that he wrote 40 years ago that he later disagreed with - perhaps that should be published as a short note somewhere!

I note some of the other comments. It is pretty hard to understand him sometimes but the interviewers are very good. He doesn’t answer all the questions and rambles a lot and clearly doesn’t always use the right word in English - I loved his comments about going to look in Sylvester Stallone’s fridge and finding a French chef. The interviewer was puzzled because it really sounded like the chef was in the fridge!

There is also a fair bit of repetition. I guess the interview was conducted over a number of days.

Despite the performances I have rated this 5 based on the overall content and also the fact that Franco is the star and doing it himself.

Disappointing, Franco is just a bad storryteller.

combined with the strong accent and repetitions throughout the book it just becomes a collection of conversations where he does not answer the question and stories that often finish without any point.

The most informative audio book for bodybuilding.

Finished this book in a day. It had answered so many questions, without having to ask them

A Fantastic Insight into The Golden Age Of Bodybuilding

Forget the new age gurus of personal training.
This is where you hear how it was really done without the gimmicks.
Plenty of fun stories from Franco along the way and proof that there was far more to these guys than the public perception.

More than Mr. Olympia

I'm glad that I didn't judge this audiobook by its cover. This audiobook is anybody who is interested in either getting started in strength traiming or improving their current program.

Franco Columbu provides educated, entertaining and insightful commentary to accompany the teachings from his 1977 book 'Winning Bodybuilding'.
As well as being two-time Mr. Olympia, Franco has completed extensive studies in nutrition amd chiropractic, which shows when he discusses anatomy and physiology.

Some audiobooks can only be consumed small bits at a time, but I powered through this one during a couple of three-hour car trips.
