Publisher's summary
Legendary football coach and Super Bowl champion with the Denver Broncos, Wade Phillips, recalls his life in football and memories of his father, NFL head coach Bum Phillips, in a book perfect for a Father's Day gift.
In his memoir Son of Bum, decorated NFL coach Wade Phillips shows that the roots of his knowledge come from his father, Bum Phillips. A beloved character in NFL history, Bum taught Wade from the beginning that "coaching isn't bitching", as well as how to have perspective on the game during tough times. These are lessons that apply both on the field and off, and Wade has passed this wisdom down to his son, Wes Phillips, an NFL coach himself.
Known for his homespun, plain-talking ways, Wade is a groundbreaking coach who has long believed in using support and camaraderie - instead of punishment and anger - to inspire his players to be winners on and off the field. And though his defensive concepts are revolutionary, he would say they begin with common sense.
Son of Bum is more than one man's memoir - it's a story of family and football and a father who inspired his son.

In Golden Days, acclaimed sports journalist Jack McCallum uses these two teams - the Jerry West/Wilt Chamberlain/Elgin Baylor Lakers and the Stephen Curry/Kevin Durant/Draymond Green Warriors - to trace the dynamic history of the National Basketball Association, which for much of the last half century has marched memorably through the state of California. Tying together the two strands of McCallum's story is Hall of Famer West, the ferociously competitive Laker guard who later became one of the key architects of the Warriors.

The modern game of football is filled with plays and formations with names like the Counter Trey, the Wildcat, the Zone Blitz, and the Cover Two. They have become part of the sport's vernacular, and yet for many fans they remain just names, often confusing ones. To rectify that, Tim Layden has drilled deep into the core of the game to reveal how these chalkboard X's and O's really work on the field, as well as where they came from and who dreamed them up.

Entertaining
This is a very entertaining book. If you are interested Bum Phillips as well as his son, its a unique book and fun. One of the most beloved figures in Houston History, his son talks about his own growth with a constant presence of his father. A little short for my taste (I like longer books), but good regardless.

This book was exceptionally well written and narrated. Great lessons to learn and live by. I’m really glad Wade Philips made it to the Super Bowl with the Broncos and won, especially after listening to this. No doubt about it...Bum was proud of his son. Way to go, Coach.
