This review is for the abridged audio version.
Horrible, terrible, waste of my time. One of my students encouraged me to read this, and because she continually asked me, I finally picked up the abridged audio version. I'm glad I got it cheap. The recording sounds like it was recorded in a tin can half a world away. The accent was strong and hard to understand. The story is touching, but is told in such a sappy way that it is just about unbearable. Save your time. Find another book to read or listen to.

I had the audio (CD) version of this book when it first came out and really liked it. My first clue that this was going to be different was when i saw that the book was an hour and a-half long. I downloaded it anyway (not having listened to the sample - BIG MISTAKE) and the second I pressed play I knew I had made a mistake. The audio is HORRIBLE!! Sounds like it was recorded in an underground bunker somewhere in Moscow in the 1960's by a woman who had taken an hour of English classes. I agree the person reading the book should have a Russian accent but you should be able to understand her without straining.
I've downloaded other books I haven't liked and shrugged with an "oh well" but this is different, this wasn't a matter of me not liking a book it was a matter of the quality being so poor I couldn't listen to it. It's hard to believe that audible would release an audio book so poorly recorded. It was beyond awful!!!
PLOT: fast and short story about the life of Russian Pair Skaters.
This book is not very long. it is told through the eyes of Ekatrina Gordiava from the early training and when she meets and skates with Sergei. The background of the old Russian System and the changes to the new. Eventually they marry and have a child. Win 2 gold medals at the Olympics. This is a good story for those who love skating and this sweet couple. I give this 3 STARS. the audio sounds like it was recorded in someone's garage and on a home recorder....and a Russian woman narrates. This is good but you have to pay attention because she drops words out of sentences. The Story is 4 stars but the rather poor audio quality and the distracting Russian narrator is less enjoyable than it could have been.
