Publisher's Summary

They were two of the most talented beauties Hollywood ever produced: the elegant Joan Crawford, a former chorus girl who shot through the ranks at MGM, and the brash, tempestuous Bette Davis, a Broadway star notorious for refusing to bow to the studio bosses. Their work together in the hit film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? sowed the seeds for a mutual hatred that would consume their lives. As each fading star tried to outshine the other, lives were upended and reputations were destroyed. Glamorous, merciless, and cruel, their feud became the stuff of legends.

Based on interviews the author conducted with both actresses and more than a decade of research, Bette & Joan shows the hard-drinking, hard-fighting duo at their best and worst. The epic story of these dueling divas is hilarious, monstrous, and tragic. This updated edition includes two new chapters. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are portrayed by Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange in the Ryan Murphy TV series Feud.

    "Old Hollywood Drama!"

Such a great book with all the juicy details! I personally love the old Hollywood glamour so this was right up my alley. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Narrator did a fantastic job as well.

    "Delicious and we'll written scuttlebutt"

Pitch perfect writing delivered by a reader who knew the subjects and at times almost channeled phony Joanie. But in all seriousness it is wonderfully written and very much a story of two titans.

Where does Bette & Joan rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Top 3.

So many juicy details about Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

What about January LaVoy’s performance did you like?

Loved it. The narrator embodied the personalities of both Bette & Joan really well.

    Any additional comments?

Been watching the TV show FEUD. Couldn't wait to get all the juicy details about the real life feud.

    "Really Enjoyed!"

Well written and researched. Worth the time to read or listen. I'm glad I read this. It changed my opinion of Joan. She wasn't perfect but she wasn't the monster Christina made you believed her to be.

"Excellent. Especially if you adore the TV Show"

This audiobook explores the lives of Joan Crawford and Bette Davis leading up to and after their only time working together on 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane'. It has everything— salacious details on both stars love affairs and scandals, and tender heartbreaking exploration of their home lives and what led to such ambition. It's a great alone and as a companion to the TV Show, though it does shine light on some of the program's creative licenses. All in all... HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

"As good as the TV show and better."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! Anyone who is a fan of old Hollywood or fans of Bette and or Joan will like this book very much. The TV show was great but this book has much more info so it is a must read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bette, Joan was to fake for me and just a downright nasty woman, not just to her kids but to anyone that she felt got in her way or looked like they may get in her way. I would rather deal with someone like Bette that tells you how she sees it than someone who lies and goes behind your back.

Have you listened to any of January LaVoy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, not that I know anyway. I like her very much!! The stories are good but she also did a good job of you know who she was reading about before you had to be told. I like that.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, very much, but I never have time for that. I did look forward to my lunches so I could listen to the next chapters. You really cannot put it down once you start.

    Any additional comments?

If you liked the TV show you will love the book and the other way around. I wanted the book to keep going but after they both died that seemed impossible LOL.

You do get a large part of both their lives before and during Hollywood so you really do get to know both Bette and Joan very well. As I said, a must read for a fan.

    "Fun yarn suffers from clinkers."

Maybe it's just my pet peeve, but when someone is paid money to narrate a book, that fact alone makes her a professional. It doesn't necessarily make her any good at it.

And I suppose I'm old enough to have read and listened to the reportage of some of the sources mentioned in this light history of studio-run Hollywood. So I know that Adela Rogers St. John's name is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable, not A-della. And that the actor's name is Ray Millaaaand, not MILLund. And I know that the playwright and critic's name is James Agee (Aygee, not Aggie for god's sake!)

So, not such a big deal, I guess, when all the people listening don't know either, and don't care. But who WOULD be listening to this tale if not someone who remembers, and who cares?

A professional narrator who knew her craft, Ms. Lavoy, wouldn't want her ignorance to grate on her listeners' ears, nor would she want to be laughed at as many times as I laughed at you during this mediocre reading.

I know that books are proof-read before publication, but doesn't anyone who knows anything proof-listen?

    "We get it."
What did you like best about Bette & Joan? What did you like least?

I was initially intrigued by the drama between the two giants. I learned a lot about their acting styles and lifestyles. The voice did a hilarious rendition of each which appeared to be realistic.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Didn't get that far.

Which character – as performed by January LaVoy – was your favorite?

Tough call. It's a tie between Joan and Betty. Although they sounded similarly.

    Any additional comments?

About 1/2-way through, I was uninterested. It's too drawn out. Petty drama can only last so many hours before I stopped caring.

A classic at last available on audio. Faultlessly gossipy text with one of the best narrators. Had stuff to do but this just captivated me. Read it when it first came out and it has improved with age. Viva divas!
