From Grand Hotel to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Joan Crawford played some of the finest parts Hollywood had to offer, establishing a reputation as the most spectacular diva on the silver screen. Even when the cameras quit rolling, her life never stopped being over-the-top. In My Way of Life, a cult classic that was first published in 1971, Crawford shares her secrets.

Part memoir, part self-help book, part guide to being fabulous, My Way of Life advises the listener on everything from throwing a small dinner party for 18 to traveling abroad to getting the most out of a marriage. Featuring tips on fashion, makeup, etiquette, and everything in between, it is an irresistible look at an era when movie stars were pure class, and Crawford was at the top of the heap.

Her way

I loved that Joan Crawford herself read this book. At times you could hear her turning pages, or traffic noises outside. I won't say that I agree with her way of life, but I did find it very interesting. If you are a fan of this amazing lady, you will want to listen to this book in her voice and in her own words.

This was great! Hearing Joan read her own book!

A lot of fun if you're a fan of Joan Crawford. You can tell it's a rather relaxed reading, probably in one of the rooms in her own home (you can hear car horns outside on occasion.) The recording comes from the original vinyl which also makes it more fun and feel authentic. She has what I would call her usual condescending opinions of just about everything. Sometimes she can sound almost loving, but mostly you can hear contempt in her voice. And no complaints here, that makes for a fun listen. I will actually listen to it again sometime. All that said, it's fascinating to hear because of the time and how life was when the recording was made and the book was written. Nothing too deep here, so if you're looking for a fun, short listen, try this out!

A Treasure

Several years ago I shared a big, old, drafty house with an older gay man. His name was Joe. He was a connoisseur of classic Hollywood films and screen legends, namely Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. He was also a huge Ethel Merman fan. There were three rites of passage I completed upon moving into my attic bedroom. The first consisted of holding hands with Joe while ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’ blasted from Ethel Merman’s disco album. The next was playing Christina to Joe’s Joan in a re-enactment of the no wire hangers scene from ‘Mommie Dearest’. The third was laughing hysterically while Joe read aloud from his paperback copy of Joan Crawford’s ‘My Way of Life’. It’s such a pleasure hearing Joan herself read the text, but Joe gave her a run for her money.

There are so many delightful moments throughout this recording, including the street sounds that bleed in: horns honking, motors revving... And then there are shocking passages that had me gasping out loud, especially Joan’s thoughts about a working woman’s libido and how she shouldn’t brag about her own professional successes around her man. I can only imagine what Gloria Steinem or Mary Richards thought.

An icon with a touch of eccentricity

You can become an icon without having icon c demands, traits, and standers. Though, in the case of the late, but ever lovely, Joan Crawford, she took it to the fanatical extreme without a hint of subtlety; no sir, she took it to the wildest ends the way she widens her eyes to the camera. Her charisma is unquestionable, her delivery is pure Prima Donna, and you can tell she enjoys every part of it.

Outdated in so many ways

I would not recommend this book at all. I wanted to learn about Joan Crawford and her life, past and present. All she did was talk about her "way of life", literally. What she cooks for parties, the color of her curtains, and gives awful advice on how to "keep" a husband. She recommends women to "never let their husbands see them unkempt" and that if you don't pay attention to your husband, someone else will. Yes, I understand she's from a different time, but it's still painful on the ears for anyone. I could only get through chapter 3 before giving up on her mind numbing words.

Not worth the money

The only thing I enjoyed about this book was hearing it in the voice of Joan Crawford.. I didn't care much for the thought on Joan Crawford's Jell-O molds or the colors she chose for her home.. I was definitely expecting something different from this book I was not at all satisfied there were a few good stories of her life in her own words in the book but very few it's mostly about her extravagant parties how to treat your guests and so on.. it's very boring book..

Love Joan Crawford

Loved this book! So many good tips and tricks to help you with your life. Some things she says are quite dated and old fashioned but most of the book he gives lovely advice. The ideal book for any Joan Crawford fan
